Dricus Du Plessis has risen to become the 2nd ranked middleweight of the UFC, and has taken every opponent he has faced, making the whole weight-class scared of him. Dricus has now also earned himself a title shot against Sean Strickland, the UFC middleweight champion, which is going down at UFC 297.

Fighters are not just scared of Dricus because of an ordinary domination, because he has actually finished 95% of the opponents he’s faced since the start of his professional MMA career, and his strength and power is something very unusual…

LITTLE KNOWN FACT: Dricus started as a grappler starting Judo in his teens. He was already a black belt in Judo before he entered his 20s. He also is an elite level Grappler/Judo/Wrestling/BJJ fighter. You can see it in how Dricus did a hip toss throw on a 200+ lbs Whittaker to take him down. Anyone who knows Judo, knows hip toss is extremely hard to execute on a big guy as it requires a lot of explosive power and technique to be successful. He regularly competes in BJJ tournaments against some of the best BJJ teams. Gracie Barra BJJ is one of the best BJJ teams and Dricus went into a tournament against THE WHOLE Gracie Barra BJJ team. Dricus destroyed the entire Gracie Barra BJJ team taking them on one after the other submitting each and everyone of them. His opponents were fresh, but he would take a little rest and come back to take on the next. He went through BJJ martial artists some even bigger than him and submitting them. The guy is an absolute monster.

As a South African. I Respect Sean Strickland but Du Plessis is an extremely underrated fighter and Represents South Africans extremely well.

He studies his opponents, and thats why he seems to have awkward fight style, but in reality each fight is different and is why each fight he is prepared different. He sees what worked from other fighters and would use that, he is a master at studying his opponents. Then he swarms them, either knock out punches or grappling on the ground, he does it all. IT is his time!

One significant reason for Dricus' success is because he's an Afrikaner, which means a white person native to South Africa (my country) who has descended from the Dutch and Huguenot settlers of the 17th century. Due to the history of Afrikaner people in SA (including their insane genetics, they are all naturally tall and large people) Afrikaners are a very tough, and at the same time very ingenious, people. The toughness though stems from the harsh environment and harsh society of South Africa, and in one way has had a positive effect on our sports. Example, our most well known sport is rugby which is like American football but on another level of physicality (you can watch some great videos online to see this). Our nation also recently won the Rugby World Cup this year 2023, in fact we are now the record holders for winning it. The point im making is that we are a people who have been toughened by the way society has been in our land, which is not a great reflection of our country honestly (politically and economically speaking). So, just like the toughness of the Eastern Europeans and Eurasians (Khabib etc.) and others we are well known for our own brand of ruggedness and physicality. We're not the most technical or precise martial artists (or sports people) like Western nations are, but we have tremendous heart which is generally typical of African people (btw, im white). If you watch our brand of UFC called EFC you would see quickly see what im talking about, very exciting bouts though not as technical. I would say we lead with the heart, and technicality follows fairly close. Fyi, we South Africans are an extreme people, very angry at our worst but very friendly and outgoing at our best.
