Why Dressing Up In The Summer Is So Hard

“I don’t like summer style.” I hear this a lot (I’ve even heard it come out of my own mouth!). Because, for some reason, getting dressed just feels more difficult in summer. It’s too hot for some of your favorite pieces. You can’t layer. You’re suddenly showing more skin. And you just don’t feel like yourself.

You may also feel like style totally shifts in the summer. Everyone is wearing bright colors and tiered dresses and barely-there tops. And if that doesn’t align with your vibe, you may feel left out. Or like you’re doing something wrong. But you’re not.

You can totally embrace your unique personal style at any time of year – including summer. It’s all about how you interpret what you like to wear as temperatures rise. So, before you write off the entire season, there are a few ways you can enjoy your summer style.

Pity us fashion girlies in the tropics! 🌴 We’ve learned to adapt to the heat tho- 95% of our wardrobes are S/S. Bode shirts & shorts, Pleats Please, Dries! AC helps 🌬️

I get that her comments were somewhat tongue in cheek. I live in the midwestern United States and when it’s hot and humid, I don’t feel like wearing much either. But one could argue that styling outfits in summer requires a lot more creativity and ingenuity because you don’t have layering and outerwear to fall back on. When I see a lot of fall styling videos, I wonder what makes the outfit work once you get indoors and take off the coat and the sunglasses, and put down the handbag? I enjoy using color and texture to add interest to my summer outfits.
But living in a place that has cold winters, I love my outerwear.

I think some fashion people need to work on their summer style, hahahaha. I used to think the same as her, but linen has changed my life ! Linen does not have to be super expensive (flee markets, thrift shops, etc...)

I love summer fashion, this summer I’ve worn a thin pair of baggy painter pants from Orslow paired with different cool baggy dress shirts and polos. Personally I think I look pretty fly, and it was absolutely doable in 35 C heat.

Summer for me is lots of linen, lace-up espadrilles, & panama hats.

It's also a great time for aloha shirts & other camp collars, all the shorts (especially high-waisted & shorter than 7"-inseam), graphic tees, baseball caps, neckerchiefs (if cotton great to soak & wear to cool down), & fanny packs (since less jackets/coats).

Not to mention lighter-weight jeans/jumpsuits/overalls & boots (also a lot of fun with shorts).

Lastly depending on plans swimwear & exercise clothes.

I was saying this the other day about myself! I think my autumn/ spring outfits are much better than my summer looks, I hate sweating and so I just want to be comfy in the heat with minimal layers, my hair up and minimal jewelry

Yh I really need to step it up for summer, don’t have much to wear when it’s actually really hot, not much of a problem in the uk, I only have like 2 shorts I wear regularly, have a tons of tees and polos and vests, and trainers. L some more relaxed formal pieces - short sleeve cream shirts and loafers is what I need.

One can dress up in the summer! I've been dressed everyday that I have been out and about and the week before last my car thermometer read 104F/40C. It's cooled down now to around 84F (29C)-88F (31C).
That one can't dress in the summer is coming from a lot of folks who are not used to warm/hot weather. Plus, those of us who are used to warm/hot weather don't get as hot and overheated as many who are not used to the heat which is why even wearing cowboy boots in the summer isn't strange. As long as they're not of synthetic material, they're fine.
We have four seasons here, but the coolest and coldest weather seasons are just shorter than they are in some other places. I have clothing for all four seasons.
Greetings from Los Angeles

I think she means - when you love fashion you love every season. You look forward to dressing different as each season comes.

I must say that she is partly right. I also like fall and winter personally more. But I also saw a guy with a great fitting suit in Berlin. I respect her that she „found“ her own niche and aesthetic, but that is not conforming to every person in the world or in Germany/Berlin. But I also like wearing Issey Miyake pleats in the summer.

But I agree, summer does hinder how you dress.

I think coming from the tropics I am not a big winter fan because when I finally got winter it wasnt the disney princess snow. It was mounds of snow that became cold muddy ice. So I jumped from the extreme of heat so no layers, to the extreme of bundles on bundles and boots.

I take the summer weather as a challenge to see if I can pull off fits while being not over layered.
It’s really just tests everyone to see who can do it well

Welcome to Australia. Layering just doesn’t happen

I'm one of those autumn/winter people. I love my knitwear, and I can wear things like leather shirts and big coats with fur collars.

Summer dressing is basically limited to a single layer (possibly two). I can still dress well, but I can't wear my favourite kinds of clothes or play with layers.
