The True Story Behind Martin Scorsese's 'Casino'

Casino, Martin Scorsese’s 1995 epic underworld story is the spiritual successor to Goodfellas in many ways. Not only did it see the director once again team up with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, but he worked with the author who wrote the source material for both Goodfellas and Casino, Nicholas Pileggi. Pileggi’s non-fiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas covers the heyday of mafia-controlled Vegas, focusing specifically on the real-life inspirations for Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Anthony Spilotro, respectively.

True story from a former Las Vegas resident and city worker here: There is a gray-suited lawyer representing the mafia in several movie courtroom scenes. He is Oscar B. Goodman, who in real life was a Las Vegas mob lawyer. He went on to serve as the city’s mayor for 12 years. Actually, he was a good (and very colorful) mayor.

If you ever visit Las Vegas, you have to check out The Mob Museum in downtown Vegas. It also has a copy of the Casino script on display. The last time I went, I was both fascinated and horrified by the pictures of the aftermath of car bombs.

Fun Fact: Robert DeNiro isn't even italian. You may think Indiana is OW! HOW AWFUL! But, as a resident, snub your nose up all you want. Cornfields for miles have their own little perfect secrets too.
