The kids in the lower sets at school believed they were dumb and didn’t push to do better…

There's an important difference between having high expectations on someone and believing in them. If you have high expectations on someone, but make them feel like its their obligation to perform then, yes, they will perform well, for now. Believing in someone requires being supportive and genuine that is important for their long-term success.

yup it's true. My teacher once complimented my athletic performance and had high hopes for me in the upcoming sports day. Next thing i knew i was standing on the stage holding 1st prizes on three different sports.

To be honest, I perform Average when my teachers expect more from me, but I top the class when they don't believe in me.😂

Yeah true...it is termed as "self-fulfilling prophecies" in the subject of sociology

It's crazy how accurate this is, I've experienced it myself. Dayum

I actually think I took control of this effect and it is no longer holding me back. I worked on myself and now I’m confident in who I am and my abilities and I stopped being around people who make me feel inferior. This makes me feel good because I genuinely think I am on the right path :)

my father had high expectation of me when i was in school, but he didn't believe i can do it and he would always criticize me if there was one of my friends who got higher score than me. I would be very depressed and did badly in school. so i guess "expectation" and "believe" need to come hand in hand

I figured out this effect in 8th grade. I was in the high advanced english class and the teacher thought we were all angels and geniuses. We all felt slightly weird in her class from her attitude of us being perfect but the effect was created. We all performed so well with all the high expectations. Meanwhile in her other average english classes, she did not believe in them in all and they all did poorly. Teachers need to set out high expectations AND believe in them even for the kids who are average and lower. It makes all the difference.

why does the exact opposite happen in case of me ? oh .. performance anxiety.

I can agree alot...I was told by one of my closest friends that I am used to having high expectations from myself which can be self damaging if I can't achieve them.
I guess she was right but that's the reason that makes me much better today. I tried to push myself to full fill my expectations 🙃

That is true. Find someone who believes in you. I had to wait until my late 20’s before I found someone who opened my eyes to my capabilities.

Important omission in the referenced study: the teachers were told that certain students were in the top percentile and others were in the lower percentile. This information was the reverse of the reality: which proved that the teacher's attention, time, and support of their students was the determining factor in their success. It was later perceived as unethical because of this... but then you realize: if it was all chance anyway: socially constructed nonsense: then what's the difference! ?

Meanwhile my mom: You’ll fail if you study for only 5hrs!!

Surely this is at least in part because are measure of how well the children are doing is based on tests which the teachers are marking with their preconceived biases?

In high school I had teachers tell me they didn’t care (their actual words) and they literally couldn’t care less about me so I gave up and now I am 22 and lost in life and scared for life after I graduate this year.

*sings in Lena Horne's beautiful voice* "Believe in YOURSELF...!" Malcolm Little told his teacher he wanted to be a lawyer. This white teacher told him, because Malcolm's Black, he should aspire to be a janitor. Malcolm Little became the great Malcolm X and inspired millions the world over.
