Are your Shimano clipless pedals feeling loose, not spinning smoothly, or due for maintenance? In this video, I walk you through overhauling Shimano clipless pedals. Whether you’re dealing with play in the pedals or simply want to keep them in top condition, this step-by-step guide will help you restore them for a smoother ride.

We start by disassembling the axle unit using the right tools, and I share tips on cleaning and greasing all the key components like bearings, lock nuts, and cones. Even though I’m servicing PD-R550 pedals, the process is similar for most Shimano clipless pedals, so you can follow along regardless of your model.

If you're ready to get your pedals spinning smoothly again, watch the video to learn how to do a complete service. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more bike maintenance content. Let me know in the comments how your overhaul went!

Cheers, and see you in the next video!

I overhauled a Shimano A520 pedal like this, and then learned that the normal method is to just remove the axle assembly, inject grease into the bottom of the pedal body, and then insert the axle. Even Park Tool has a video showing this, and not taking the bearings apart. Since then, I've never seen enough crud in the bearings to justify disassembly, and I just inject grease. Perhaps it would be different if I was riding off-road.

All the videos on this topic concentrate on the bearings and how to deal with movement or play there, but I'm experiencing movement at the other end of the pedal axle and there doesn't seem to be any advice on what might be causing that, or how to fix it. Anybody have any ideas?
