Cossacks were always Ukrainian, infact even before Russian conquest in like 1718 or smth. The dance is older that that. In 1775 Russians expelled Cossacks and they migrated into modern day Russia. In 1830 some migrated further, some returned. The Cossacks became nutorious in the Russian culture as a part of Russification of Ukraine. Now "Cossackia" is divided.
