As a lifelong Bostonian, we are very proud of the Boston Tea Party and all of our history.

Hi Dave and Ash, we did celebrate Guy Faulks Day here in the US up until the revolution. In 1775, Washington had been placed in command of all the troops fighting the British and he outlawed the troops from celebrating the day. So it might have been a natural progression for us to carry on some of those traditions to the Fourth. Actually, many of the first generation of Americans called it The Glorious Fourth.

The Patriot was set during the Revolutionary War. Jason Isaacs' character (the guy who burnt people alive in the church) was actually based on a real person - Banastre "The Butcher" Tarleton.

When I worked I got 5 weeks vacation accrued over time. Took me 20 years to reach the 5 weeks. I worked there for 32 years. But each Company makes their own vacation length. Our Union negotiated the up to 5 weeks.

Vikings settled in Greenland in the 11th century and later moved to Newfoundland, an island in the North Atlantic in the Peninsula of Labrador, Canada. They did not reach terra firma in either present day Canada or US.
The first English settlement in North America was in 1607 in Massachusetts.
The first settlement of Spain was in 1565 in Florida.
The French founded a city in Wisconsin in 1634.

King George III was king of Great Britain from 1760 (17 years before the American independence) until his death in 1820. He was referred to as the Mad King.
King George had recurrent mental illnesses and in 1810 he had a final relapse and his son was named Prince Regent. The King died in 1820 and his son succeeded him as King George IV.

I suggest watching an old musical called 1776 it's about the writing of the Declaration of Independence and if you take out the song and dance it's fairly accurate LOL

Ash, we have 11 “federal holidays:” New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The average U.S. employee receives an average of 7.6 paid holidays … tho statistics show 21% of U.S. employees receive 6 paid holidays per year.

As a hillbilly from the Appalachian Mtns. with Scots-Irish and English heritage, you're spot on, Dave. Clark and Clarke are very common names in the US.

Dave, you can wear your Red Coat. When I was stationed at RAF Alconbury as part of the US military we would have a picnic/celebration on the 4th and I would take the piss out of my British mates. But it was all good fun as they were still my mates.

For our 4lth of July today it was just the two of us. For more than 20 years we've celebrated with a picnic at my sister's house, where she had a large, built in pool and a lovely big yard, etc. She died in December and the house was sold by Spring so no picnic. We're all still working on our "new normal."

In answer to, I think Ash's query about what we Americans studied about history, when I was in school, we didn't have History as a subject, we had World Cultures, or Social Studies one grade - like 4th grade, then in 5th grade, we'd study American Cultures, and so on, through 12th grade. I'm old, but we studied English history extensively, learning about things like the Battle of Hastings and the Magna Carte, etc. I remember making charts of dates in British history that ended up being of worldwide significance. I distinctly remember getting bogged down in German/Prussian history and the endless wars. We studied more American history, of course.

The Patriot was about American Independence, btw. Breathtaking, beautiful film.

Various states have all kinds of different rules/laws about fireworks, what's legal, and even how old you have to be to purchase them. In recent years my own state has vastly loosened up on all of that so all through lastweek, but especially Wednesday, Thursday and on into the weekend, we've had competing neighbors, showing off who has more money to burn! We're in a little bit of a valley with mountains/hills on either side.

There was a serious accident at a large fireworks display in Utah on the 4th. They were in a stadium and one side, with three sides with the audience. One firework didn't go off as planned, going rogue and shooting right into the stands. One young woman took a direct hit to her face and several others around her were injured.

We have Federal and state holidays so it is slightly more complex than the UK.
Federal holidays are
New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day,
Juneteenth
Independence Day, Labor Day,
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving and Christmas.
You can negotiate your vacation time depending on the job/ profession. Many people trade off a slightly higher salary for a few more vacation days.

"What would US be like if America lost the Revolution" posted June 20, 2023, on the main OB channel. That would be a great one to react to on this channel, Ash would probably enjoy it. Very thought provoking video.

I think you guys would really enjoy some of the fun things we have here for the 4th. I think the "Red, White, and Blueberry BBQ Bash" is a good example of the sort of thing you can find to do with a family. It has sack races, face painting, live music, bbq, tons of themed treats from the blueberry harvest, etc.

Great reaction! I think Ash would probably like watching the Oversimplified version of the American Revolution.

There are 12 federal bank holidays in the US. Not all companies follow all of them; banks, government, etc have to
