How to fix a frozen or unresponsive desktop in Windows 10

If you can't click on, right-click on, select, or anything else the icons on your desktop because your desktop has frozen up, here's the (very easy) fix.

Doesn't work for me. My task manager froze when it opened on the desktop. It is at the "details" tab, and I am unable to change it to the "processes" tab. Strangely the numbers on the task manager like memory and CPU changes just fine like normal on the desktop. It is just the mouse that can't do anything to any app on the desktop

Wow, I had a weird visual glitch where I got the frozen window effect and when I minimized something it tripled and nothing on my desktop looked normal. Doing this helped refresh my desktop when the regular/normal way to do so did not work. My desktop was still interactable, but everything was visually glitched out.

This worked, but only for my desktop icons on the right side of the screen! If I open Explorer from Task Manager I can still work with the folder desktop version, but homescreen icons on the right and middle of the screen do not respond to mouse hovers or clicks. Very odd. Don't have time to troubleshoot further since I have a workaround--but definitely broke....

That worked for me. Thanks! My search bar wasnt working either when i tried this but it fixed that too. Il try to look into the issue and try to find the cause. Maybe there is a prevention for this issue

It also could be due to not defraging your drive as I defragmented my drive and it fixed this as well as I tried this way first but didn’t fix it so I degraded and that worked
