I went to the choir rehearsal a few days ago and noticed how I and some members had a challenge of getting up and I also had problems getting out of the car. Thank you very much for this video.

Hi, I taught the Fall Prevention, A Matter of Balance, to seniors and the elderly in my community for many years. I too have them scoot to the edge of the chair, bed, couch...getting their back off the back rest. To place their feet firmly on the floor with a waist wide base. I encourage them to to do a few toe & heel taps to increase the blood flow and to warm the joints up. This also prevents Orthostatic Hypotension which is common among seniors and the elderly especially if they are taking high blood pressure medications. I ask them when standing up to also use their breath, to take a breath and exhale as they push their feet down into the floor. Standing up requires the use of leg strength rather than using their arms when pushing from the arm rest. Do bend forward and Stand Straight Up, with their chin up, eyes up... looking across the room not down on the ground. Looking down towards the ground will change their balance, making them top heavy which may cause a forward fall. We want their center of gravity to stay down by the hips and waist. Once they stand up, pause, take another breath, look for hazards...then move...slowly and mindfully.
