Matt, the Beetle was produced in Brazil from 1953 to 1986 and came back to production from 1993 to 1996.
Maybe you mistook the production in Mexico, that ended in 2003.
Fun fact: The T1 (named simply Kombi) was produced in Brazil from 1953 to 2013.

Note, the last beetle ever made wasn't built in brazil but instead, in the VW plant in Puebla, Mexico, the car can be seen today at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany.
