This way of starting the car would make more sense in a manual. This way, the racing driver would actuate the clutch pedal as he enters the car and before he turns the key.

My 1960 fairlane has the ignition on the left. Same reason. Lol

Or put the seatbelt on with right hand and start the car with the left hand

A lot of semis and class b trucks have the ignition on the left too. It's pretty convenient for pretripping and such

It was so they could put the car in gear while they were turning the key with their other hand. Not really to turn the key sooner

The only way I can make sense of this is that you had:
* Left foot on Clutch
* Right foot on brake (or accel, especially if)
* _Right hand on handbrake._
* Meaning, left hand on Ignition.
Because otherwise in today's cars (especially if they don't require key insertion) it doesn't make much sense. I've had to quickly get cars running, and I don't think left ignition would ever had made much of a difference in a manual.
