I was part of the hīkoi (protest) yesterday in Wellington and it was such powerful energy. Standing with the Māori is so important as the Treaty affects everyone and the Māori have historically been the activists defending NZ's natural resources from being destroyed and/or sold off. Mauri ora!

KIA KAHA!! New Zealander here although not Maori. David Seymour is from a minority party that formed a coalition with the current conservative party who did not have enough seats to form the government. This proposed law change is a part of their coalition agreement. This means that a party with under 10% of the entire vote is making a change that the majority of New Zealanders did not want or ask for. His ultimate goal being to weaken the consents needed in order for big mining companies to come tear up the land easier. Thank you for covering this phil! New Zealanders will not allow this to happen!!

Love your pronunciation of Maori Phil. As a Maori man myself it was lovely to hear you take the time to pronounce it properly. Also as a Maori man, the act party and their bills are galvanizing the population against them which is lovely to see. The unity being shown is heartwarming.
The treaty principles enshrined in the constitution of Aotearoa, New Zealand, and have been part of the resolution of grievances that are decades and sometimes centuries old.

I’m from New Zealand! It has been devastating to see so many steps taken backwards since our latest government came into power. We’ve been working so hard to slowly move forward, and they’ve just been stripping so much of that work away!

The disestablishment of the Māori Health Authority Te Aka Whai Ora earlier this year was already a huge hit, especially as we still have quantifiable evidence of the prevalence of bias in healthcare and the negative affects on tangata whenua, on top of the systemic factors that have lead to disparities between Māori and non-Māori health.

The treaty principles bill is not just an insult but an attack on the indigenous people of this land and the very few rights they’ve managed to maintain.

Kiwi here, thanks for covering the latest hīkoi, there is so much racist rhetoric surrounding this bill it really is appalling. The bill itself seeks to destroy any sort of self efficacy that the Māori have fought so hard for - touting "equal" treatment for all New Zealanders when policies disproportionately impact Māori is disingenuous and abhorrent.

I work in mental health and addictions and there have been massive cuts to the sector which have just caused so much harm. The treaty principles bill is really just the latest in the conservative government in keeping the Māori down.
