I’m 41 and just getting back into judo after 14 years off after an old friend from my training group moved to my city. I played ultimate frisbee for most of my time away and am still in great (albeit different) shape. After training again for a year I can do judo standing and ground work at a pretty decent level and I’m having fun learning skills at a higher level than when I originally trained.

Hong,
Thank you so much for this channel. I first took judo when I was 19 or 20 in a one semester course at community college. I was impressed and loved the class and my teacher, but my life decisions didn't include continuing. I am now about to turn 57 and my daughter wants to take judo as part of her overall self defense, so I am going to dig out my old judogi and join her. We have started exercising together because we both need to be in better shape for the rigors of judo training.

Your channel is both a great help and an inspiration. I appreciate that you present very realistic and serious things for an older person to consider and prepare for. No candy-coated "you can do anything, " but "yes, you can do it, but keep this in mind."

Please keep up the good work you are doing with this channel.

Sincerely, - David

Done karate aged 6 to 12, earned my black belt

Done boxing for few years late teens

Went back to karate early 20s and ended up 2nd degree black belt. Also dabbled in some boxing/kickboxing again and had my eye fractured, so stopped martial arts

Concentrated In powerlifting/strongman from 24 to before pandemic age 36

Now I have switched gears and decided to grapple and start judo aged 37. Only a few months in and believe I know nothing, but I fall good lol

I always hear that judo is rough for older guys, but I have trained most my life and feel as I can go hard. With years of training my bones are very strong. I understand someone inactive will need to be more cautious, but again just listen to your body and train smart

Many practitioners train until they are well into pension age, so anyone under 50, or even 60 should not be afraid to start. It honestly is never too late and an older person may have a little athletic disadvantage. However, they will be much wiser!

Good stuff.

I'm a very fit 49 year old and considering judo or BJJ. I've studied other stuff before and train with weights and such regularly and this was very encouraging.

All of this is inspiring until you are using LWOP at your job from your injuries.

I started Muay Thai at 49, and I’m still going! I may not keep up with the guys in their 20s, but I keep at it.

Im in my mid 20s and have little to no experience in any martial arts. ( in Karate i got an orange belt when i was like 10, but then i quit due to studies). But i am interested in learning Judo and i am feeling optimistic to compete in all tournaments, even as far as competing in IJF. What are your thoughts on this?
