Whereas "Voices of a Distant" was a long-distance relationship science fiction, the animated work "The Place Promised in the Clouds" is the story of the so-called "Sleeping Princess". The main characters are Sayuri Sawatari, Hiroki Fujisawa, and Takuya Shirakawa. It's the story of a heroine who has suffered from her sleeping illness and two boys trying to save her for several years from the summer of 15 years old.

The stage is the "present", which is different from the "present", when Hokkaido was divided and ruled by other countries after World War II. The characters are junior high school students in Aomori prefecture who yearn for Hokkaido, a neighboring country that is close and far away.
To start the production of this work, I first produced a 3-minute pilot film from October to December 2002. Ultimately, we plan to finish the animation as a 50-minute animation with the goal of creating entertainment with a higher quality than "Hoshinokoe". The staff is a unit of three people, Makoto Shinkai for director, art and various other things, Tenmon for music followed by "Voices of a Distant", and Shio Tazawa for drawing. With a small number of people, I would like to explore the form of animation that originates from a place different from the studio.

Shinkai's synopsis:

Another post-war world where Japan was divided and ruled. In the summer of 1996, a huge mysterious "tower" built in Hokkaido under Union territory began operation secretly. In Honshu, Japan, which is under US military occupation, no one knows the true purpose of the construction of the "tower".

There were two boys who had a feeling of admiration and awe in the "tower" that still stands clearly in sight even across the Tsugaru Strait. 15-year-old Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa. They are using military scraps to assemble a small plane, Vera Sheila, at the site of an abandoned train station in the mountains. They also have a longing for their classmate Sayuri Sawatari. Both Sayuri and the "tower" are symbols of things that boys are still out of reach, but that they should be able to touch someday.

However, Sayuri develops a memory disorder of unknown cause in the summer of the third year of junior high school and transfers to Tokyo. In an indescribable sense of collapse, Hiroki and Takuya are thrown out of the plane, and they start walking on different paths.
2001, Tokyo. Hiroki and Takuya, who have grown up to be college students, meet again by chance and find out that Sayuri, who was once longing for, is still ill. Sayuri has been sleeping for years. The two decide to solve the mystery of Sayuri's illness and save her from her eternal sleep. In the process, I unexpectedly approach this world, the "tower" and the hidden secrets of Sayuri.
