I think an older person might want to get an older dog. 5-6 year olds have usually mellowed out but still have good years left.

I am older and have a 20 pound, tall Pomeranian. He is 12 and is perfect for me. He minds me and I mind him, meaning we respect each other’s habits. He doesn’t bark much, has learned to ignore the UPS, Fed Ex and propane delivery trucks. But he does bark if someone is at the door and if another dog or a large animal is in the yard . We used to have moose in Alaska and we have wild horses here in Nevada. He lets us know when they’re around. He’s great with kids and loves people. He loves to play “find it” where he sits in the kitchen and stays until we call him to come find bits of his treats hidden. He sits, stays, comes, is quiet, lays down and comes up when commanded. Supposedly his site was a white Japanese spitz and his mother a tiny Pomeranian. He looks like a sable mittle spitz. He’s a great, mellow dog.

My only caution with offering larger dogs to older people is LIFTING an injured or older dog who is on his last day. Or begins to have joint problems. My last big dog was 100lb GSD. I was 55 when he went down. I was alone, and he needed the vet. I went and grabbed his leashed, made the clasp click a few times from down the hall and he hobbled to me. He had terminal cancer, we already knew that. But getting him into the truck was torture for both of us. I stopped, he and I ate ice cream and he was gone. But it has made me seriously consider the size of my dogs. Pulling is one thing, but the anxiety of being helpless with a dog so big that needs you is a real consideration.

My grandparents got a Dachshund, he is so high energy and it is great for my grandma, who needed a dog to keep her busy/entertained because she is at home most of the time taking care of my grandpa. Their dog also saved my grandpa’s life when he fell outside in the middle of the night. The doggo alerted my grandma and woke her up and led her to my grandpa. What a great dog:)

As an older person, I've always felt that getting an older pet, especially when you're a senior and/or retiree, is the best choice. It's heartbreaking to see pets in shelters because their owners passed away. You can't explain the death of a pet parent to them; they don't understand. All they know is that their pet parent abandoned them. That's why I advocate adopting an older pet when you're an older person.

As a canine behaviorist what is your opinion on rotties for new dog owners? Obviously they need a lot of training, what would be the top things to train?

A whippet and greyhound love to chase. So if they see a cat or bird, they pull hard! You can teach them not to, but it takes effort and consistency. I own a whippet and know many people with whippets/greyhounds. They are amazing! But I won't recommend them to people that cannot handle a pulling dog. It's not only dangerous for the owner, but also for the dog, since it might get in front of a car.

My dad with a hip replacement had a keeshond (not a large dog) that pulled him over & injured him. I think each situation should be assessed differently.
