How to Use a Butter Bell

We love using a butter bell (or butter crock) for butter storage: The butter stays soft and spreadable at room temperature, and the small amount of water added forms an airtight seal. Lisa shows you how to properly use them.

We have kept our butter out all our lives (covered - mostly) and never had a problem with it going bad.

During my darkest time during Covid I bought a butter bell... a beautiful piece of vintage pottery. I don't exactly know why, but getting some little thing like that boosted my spirit just a tiny bit at a time when I really needed it. I love my butter bell, it's awesome.

My pretty butter bell was a gift from my Amish neighbor, and I love it! She makes the butter for me as well. Fresh, creamy, soft butter is always on my table now. No more margarine or hard butter!

So many negative comments! I love my butter bell just because it's a nifty old-fashioned thingamajig that's charming.

I Love love love my butter bell! I have it 20 years. I never put water in the bottom. Never. I tried it when I first bought my butter bell and didn’t like the water and found it to be unnecessary. I have never had a bug issue with it. I live in hot FL and I have never had my butter spoil or go bad either. When I wash the bell I wash with soap and hot water then rinse with cold water, dry it and put it in the fridge for a short bit to chill the stoneware before I refill it.
When I put in a fresh stick of butter I let it soften before putting it in the bell. I find using the back of a tablespoon works perfectly for putting the butter in and pressing it down. I never have a mess and it’s super easy to do.

I've never had a stick of butter last more than a couple days in our house so keeping it on the counter in a butter dish is fine.

Glad you explained ! I saw this at a store on sale, I didn’t know how could this stay on my counter and be food safe to eat after weeks….????
So I put it back . Now that you explained it ….next time I see it on sale, I will consider it IF my hubby stops complaining about too much stuff on the counter ! Who dreams up these gadgets?
Please continue to enlighten us ….

Yes, very important to note that the water must change every few days. Instead of doing that, however, you can just leave the butter out on a dish (with a lid). It will last just as long as butter in a bell, but is very low-maintenance and does not mold like a bell.

I bought one of these last spring. Since I like cooking, I love having softened butter any time.

I’ve been leaving my butter on the counter my whole life and I’ve never gotten sick from it. Granted we go through butter pretty quickly so it never stays for long.

I cherish my late grandma's glass-covered butter dish. It's simple, effective, and I can see how much butter is left at all times.
