EYE WATERINGLY EXPENSIVE! Devon Poshtowns

Today on Turdtowns it's an episode of Posh Towns. This is the show where we visit the eight most expensive towns and villages in a County based on house prices. Devon is having a housing crisis with more second home owners than council properties. In some towns as much as 60% of properties are Air BnB and holiday rental. This is destroying the communities and leaving winter ghost towns. Many of these buyers come from London who have big wallets.
Do you think second home owners should be banned or taxed more? Do we have a god given right to live in the town we grew up in?
Watch this video and let me know your thoughts!

I love it when local people buy the shop.

I live in S Devon. All this is brutal but true. We have NO 'affordable' homes. I do not agree with second homes at all. Till everyone has a first home, no second homes, thank you. It is a financial nightmare here.

As a South Devon resident I’ve been to all these places with Salcombe being the least number of times! That’s how much it’s a victim of it’s own success. You only make the long drive to be disappointed for no parking and no one fancies trying again.

Cute polite kids, that says a lot about the first town 👏🏻

I lived in Budleigh Salterton when I was growing up. Lovely place. Nice to see you covering this great town.

I’m an Aussie who family originated from Devon and we are descendants of the Plantagenets and are related to the current Earl of Devon( who would not know me from a bar of soap ), but I am and have always been fascinated by Devon and Cornwalll since I was a child, before we knew of the family connection. Our family home is Powderham Castle and I so desperately want to see it before I kick the bucket, to see where my ancestors lived and died (and some were put to death at the Tower of London). This place has always held a strong attraction for me since I was very young and now I know why, it is a part of my soul, and I actually do dream of coming over and just feeling the soil of my forebears. So please put in a good word for me into the ether to help me fulfil my dream. I have Systemic Lupus with other complications and my greatest fear is not seeing this place that touches my soul before I die. I need a Tattslotto win to get there and hope is fading that I will feel that soil for myself. Almost makes me cry. Fingers crossed for the Lotto win, which I buy very rarely so my chances are not looking too good ❤

Dartmouth is interesting. Has a stunning estuary location, some of the grandest properties in Devon yet also some of the most deprived wards in Devon too.

I enjoyed this video. Very well made. I live and work in rural South Devon so it was nice to see some of the more familiar places on your video. Thanks!

I know why Bigbury and Thurlestone are on this list - The coast there is stunning. I live next to Lustleigh - Beautiful chocolate box town that's like stepping back in time, it's also no wonder that its on this list, but it's not as isolated as you'd think. The moor and many touristy areas are pretty much on its doorstep. Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracy are both a stones throwaway in either direction, even if the road is a bit pants. If you're a cyclist, you've got the Wray Trail running right through the town, following the path of the old railway. There's even a big department store (Trago Mills) that takes about 20-30ish minutes to cycle to from Lustleigh which is really easy to get to, for those inclined and know how.

Great video Mr Towns! We absolutely LOVE Woolacombe. We live is Stoke, a TurdTown in the true sense of the word, but leave our caravan in Woolacombe over the summer and spend at least 6 weeks of the year down there (before dragging the van back to Turd Central for the winter). We're not at all surprised by the average house price, as the stock is dominated by large properties with a sea view. There are a fair few family homes set back, but a 3-bed town house will still set you back £450k, which would buy you a 6-bed detached home in Stoke. We like to go out of season, and we hear a lot of the locals moaning about the tourists, having returned after letting their homes for the summer! Let's face it, they wouldn't be there without us... co-existence and respect is the key, and thankfully, Woolacombe pulls it off admirably. I'd live there if I could afford it 🙂

A very good video, and nice to see what you look like at last. I come from Devon, but live now in Wales because I could not afford to live back home (in Brixham, Devon) when I left the RAF. It really is a case of the haves and have nots.

Great video. I live on the outskirts of plymouth and can support you on the fact that places like bigbury and Thurlestone are completely dead and souless - even in summer. As for salcombe - i can't stand the place. There is a level of smugness and superiority from those who ho there in the summer and its a ghost town in winter (which i prefer). Countryside around it though is absolutely stunning.

Random Trivia: Budleigh Salterton was featured in a 2003 episode of Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the Bentley Continental GT. In the episode, Clarkson called Budleigh Salterton "Britain's most overpriced, dreary place" and said the name was typical of a Bentley Continental GT owner.
