Jayland Walker: Protesters demand justice after Black man fatally shot multiple times by Ohio police

Protesters took to the streets of Akron, Ohio on Sunday to demand justice for the killing of 25-year-old Jayland Walker, a Black man whose body was found with some 60 gunshot wounds after he fled a traffic stop last week.

The march, led by the civil rights organization Akron National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), gathered hundreds of demonstrators who marched in the streets, waving "Black Lives Matter" flags and chanting "we are done dying!" and "justice for Jayland!"

Sunday’s protest began shortly after Akron police released bodycam video, which shows eight police officers were involved in a shooting that killed Walker.

Police played multiple videos at an earlier news conference, one of which they say shows a gunshot being fired from the car driven by Walker. He fled in his vehicle after officers attempted to pull him over for a minor traffic violation.

After a chase lasting several minutes, Walker jumped out of the car and ran away from police, the video showed. Police said it appears he was turning toward officers, who at the time believed he was armed. A gun was later recovered from his car.

The eight officers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, Akron Police Chief Stephen Mylett said, and they have not made any individual statements.

Those officers saw a person fleeing in a vehicle at 90+ mph in the middle of the night, firing shots at them, then jumping out with a balaclava on, running and turning towards them like he was going to open fire. You mean to tell me you have to wait for someone to shoot at you first to defend yourself? Every week several police officers across the US are killed in shootings, they could have been next in line and they rightfully defended themselves. Condolences to the Walker family, I'm glad the officers are fine. This man had plenty of opportunity to resolve this situation peacefully. He decided otherwise. That's on him.

How did they know he was black when he had a ski mask on? Oh, the ski mask was black so that was close enough? If someone wrote a how-to for getting yourself shot by police it might read "lead police on a high speed case, shoot at them out the window, stop and get out with a ski mask on, run a short distance and then abruptly turn around and make movements with your arms and hands which is not putting them up, enjoy the lead shower".

Jaylan got Justice. He was shooting at police from a speeding vehicle then ran away from the car with a ski mask on. The police did not know if he still possessed a weapon when he turned and reached for something.
