How to Create a Web Query in Excel to Get Current Data

Показать описание
In addition to using the standard, Select, Copy & Paste process, you can create a Web Query in Excel. The advantage of the Web Query is that when you "Refresh" it, you now have access to the most current information - without leaving Excel.

Web Queries are great for setting up a system to gather the most current Sports Scores, Stock Prices or Exchange Rates. Watch as I demonstrate the process to follow to set this up in Excel.

Hi Wayne -

Thanks for your feedback. I agree with you. I have cleared away the extraneous toolbards.

Thank you!

I am pleased that you learned something new from my video.

And, so did I from your feedback. I did not fully consider my audience before filming this video episode. I frequently experiment with different Toolbards and I should have deleted most of them prior to filming this video.

@Danny Rocks Still a great video regardless of the number of toolbars. It's always great to learn something new. Thank you!

Thanks for adding your comment.

I went back and took a look at this video and I agree, when I filmed this tutorial, I was not paying as much attention to the number of Internet Browser Toolbars that had been installed.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Video Starts @ 1:02 (Spare yourself from the Toolbarfs) (realize also that you can follow along without sound... I did.); The main reason you came here Ends @ 2:16 ; "Edit Query" Context Menu @ 2:30 ; Another context menu option "Data Range Properties" appears @ 3:28 ; Stretching for time by informing people that hyperlinks are a thing @ 4:15, followed by repeating everything he did in the first half ALL OVER.. like EVERYTHING. (Basically if you watched paste 4:15 you re-watched the video unnecessarily)

Summary:
Start: 1:02
Normal User Video Ending: 2:16
"Advanced" (not really) Context Menu Tip 1: 2:30
"Advanced" (not really) Context Menu Tip 2: 2:30
Alternative Ending: 4:15

Fantastic presentation Danny. Alas, I have a MAC and I am finding that the things you take for granted with a normal pc are made near impossible with a MAC. I'll play around with the options - I am using Excel 2010 for MAC and it does have an option of "Get external HTML" data. However, rather than open Google, as yours did, mine goes to a directory as if I'm selecting a file. If you have ideas - great. But please don't worry if not. Thanks, Paul

Hi, Great presentation skills. Thanks. What should be done if the data in the web page runs to several pages ? How do we extract data from website if the same runs to several pages ?

thank you Danny :)
i got a question, what if the website requires a password?
say the data i need is on a different link that requires access, does it work?
i tried it once, so i had my credentials entered and it works if i keep excel opened, but if i close excel and reopen it again, and refresh the data, excel gets stuck in a loop and doesnt get it anymore... :(

No, this is not possible on a public website. You need to look for the HTML Table Tags that are defined with Yellow Boxes with Black Arrows.

Some websites - usually intranemts - may allow you to import XML Data. More of these are showing up.

I wish that I had a better answer for you at this time.

Thank you!

My thought is:
If you do not need the information to update automatically, then you can cop the data from the website and then use Paste Special to - e.g. retain the source formatting.

Let me know if this works for you.
