What Does the Bible Say about Protests? - Divine riots, state violence, and who gets believed
Показать описание
As many rally yet again to protest police brutality, and many others condemn any protest that does not remain peaceful, a friend sent me a timely question: “What are your thoughts on rioting, from a biblical standpoint?”
In this video, I respond to that question by:
- exploring biblical examples of protest and uprising;
- considering Jesus' instruction to "turn the other cheek" and what we learn about protest from his crucifixion and resurrection;
- and pondering whose perspectives get broadcasted and treated as credible.
TIMESTAMPS
Biblical examples explored:
- (1:36 - 7:06) the Exodus story, where God sends plagues as a "Divine riot" when peaceful protests fail; where there is "plundering" (looting? or reparations?); and where the tools of state violence must ultimately be dismantled for justice to prevail.
- (7:07 - 11:09) the Book of Esther, where peaceful protest actually works, but even so it turns out that oppressed communities must be equipped to fight back against state-sanctioned violence.
- (11:10 - 12:10) the various prophets whom God instructs to use strong language that could well incite violence against leaders
- (12:11 - 16:49) Jesus' demonstration on "Palm Sunday," when he enters Roman-occupied Jerusalem to cries of "Save us, Son of David" so that many leaders fear an uprising
"Turning the other cheek" and Jesus' death:
- (16:50 - 17:25) Not about passively accepting violence! but about exposing violence as evil
- (17:26 - 19:56) How dare we look at Jesus' torture and his loved ones' trauma and excuse similar state violence in our midst?
- (19:57 - 24:10) Jesus' solidarity with all harmed by state violence - James Cone's "cross and lynching tree" - more on turning the other cheek
- (24:11 - 25:40) The Resurrection's good news: the State tries to erase these lives, but God's compassion & justice win - thus we Say Their Names
Whom do we believe?
- (25:41 - 27:55) When news comes out about protest violence, whose stories do you listen to? If you were a disciple who witnessed Jesus’ empty tomb, whom would you believe?
- (27:56 - end) if you are against violent protests, why not do your part to help protests remain peaceful?
