I guess this way is more simple but I turned 1.25 to 5/4, 1/2 to 2/4, added for 7/4 then subtracted 3/4 for 4/4 which is 1, 1-7=-6

Brackets are not needed for this problem.

-6 took 5 seconds. Thinking many can't do this is worrisome. How bad is math instruction?
