The UK is in a particularly vulnerable position when it comes to global protectionism. Devoid of a manufacturing base, lacking hi tech industries a deliberately debased agricultural sector and over reliance on financial services

Won't work...everybody needs to tariff the US.

Speaking to Trump directly must be very taxing especially as it doesn’t achieve anything.

If these two are chatting to each other its not for the benefit of the ordinary people .

What do we possibly need that America produces..? Their food standards are low.. their cars are crap... and they are the likely goods we get in exchange for access to our public services, NHS, and global brands...if only we had a large trading block we could join to benefit trade..?

Talking to Trump will not do any good.

Trump is afraid of any teaming eg. EU / Canada. Finally, the UK needs to decide. ... but there is not really an option for Starmer. The worst position is to be an ally in Trumps universe.

On an economic perspective tariffs against the UK make no sense since the UK has a deficit, but it's not really about trade is it, it's about control and bullying.
As for Starmer. I view him as Trump light. It is clear he secretly admires him.

Sky news is reporting right now that “Trump is ‘very angry’ with Putin”. Citation marks observed. Just seems extraordinary that highly delicate geo-political issues have a) become so personalised, and b) are discussed, accounted for, if not determined, in an emotional register. As though these matters are not dependent on rational analysis, calm deliberation and decision making.

I'm wanting ridicule to begin by changing MAGA to mean Make America Go Away. It could be a winner.

Trump being so unpredictable should make it clear to Starmer, that we should be sticking with the EU, and not risk ruining both relationships.

Labour see a trade deal as the only way to balance the books after Brexit. A deal which could achieve thet is not what trump wants..

Listening to the madness of Trump is worse than being tortured .

Doesn't he want to join the Commonwealth ? He likes The King, right ? Exemptions for UK maybe.

Lots of commenters think it's somehow noble to get into a fight with a mad gorilla. It isn't. It takes brains and patients to diffuse the situation and lead the creature back to its cage. So far, Starmer is playing Trump well.

Free speech = tariff free, suck it up Starmer.

The term p***ing in the wind comes to mind. No to cutting the laughable 2% tax on big tech, it should be 20%!

The UK is completely reliant on the US. Not taxing the tech bros or limiting their activities will help with Trump.

I'm no fan of Trump (or American politics in general ) but hopefully this move will signal the end of globalism.

Side note: isn't King Charles also the head of state of Canada? How does his invitation to Trump make peace with the "51st state" rhetoric?
