It’s 50/50 for me. But I do have one residential client that tells me to turn on his drive way when ever possible. Love that guy!!!

I prefer to turn in the yard but that's from learning to work fields on a farm that were outlined in checks not leaving you options. Makes for less cleaning and when worked properly you'll pass over an area only once which is more efficient for many reasons. But the ease of turning in yard depends on what type of equipment being used. Push mowing, ride on (front steer/center pivot/rear steer), zero turns, front/mid/rear mount mowing implement. I personally prefer rear mounted implements with center pivot but that's again because of my farm time and more seat time means more comfortable with that process.

So in the end, I would say it depends on equipment (most importantly, process (mulch, bag, discharge) and lay out (yard size, plant beds, pools, or any other obstacles). Each has it's own ability to require specific field (yard/grass/turf/dirt if you're starting from scratch) working techniques.

I always try and make my turns on the lawn to keep from tracking up the driveway. Then again, I’m 100% residential now so I like to avoid the complaints.

Wiggy Wiggy Wiggy Wally!! What a great topic Bud!! I agree, all depends on the circumstances. What I like doing sometimes is running my outside lines on the very outside of the lawn (past the walkway line nearest curb). Then as I'm running my stripes I I'll drive over the walkways & mow the remaining strip, turn & continue with my pass. Hope that makes sense Bud. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!

Interesting topic. I agree with wet tires and messy tracks. I also know that sharp turns on dry leave black tire rubber marks. 3 and 4 point turns take too long and still tear grass if not done correctly. I usually make a perimeter edge that cleans the edger debris first. Then, some yards get the full spiral until yard is done, and some get cut in sections that keep a wider turn, with less tearing. Kind of a back and forth cutting a section off each half..

Great topic. I don't turn around on driveways or side walks. Not that anyone has ever said anything, I hate cleaning it up. Time consuming.

Nice, a real meat-and-potatoes kind of vid. I go by how wet it is and by the amount of growth. The chlorophyll in the grass can stain like crazy, but if it's dry then I find the mower is happy to clear the mulch and have empty chipmunk cheeks for going into the next pass.
Good vid, man

Hey Wally, Our company is always on the turf for turn arounds. We do change directions each week so that can help prevent the repetitive turn around bald spots. I like the yards that have three different angles so we can go three different mowing directions. Like the video's, keep them coming!

I turn on the driveway when possible for the curb appeal. It looks so much better. However I do have home owners that doesn't want the tire marks on the driveway. Also turning on the driveway is much harder on the mower tires

Love the new intro! Driveway turns are fine with blacktop drives, but concrete is a no. My solution to stressing the edge grass is simply to mow 1-2 strips in from the drive, and then turn from that point. ANSWER: It depends. 😉

Great Topic! You highlighted both sides for and against turning around on on either the driveway or on the turf. What I REALLY WANT TO KNOW is: what do you prefer???? 🤣🤜🤛

Once I get the edges nice and crispy, I try not to drive on them. Then I can maintain with a string trimmer for a few weeks before using a blade again.

I agree on all points. We might turn around on asphalt, but we stay off of cement and faded asphalt if we can.

Coincidentally, I’ve been battling this same issue, and I’m torn because I know it looks like ass when I turn around on my clients driveways, but I like the stripes disappearing at the driveway edge. I use my leaf blower and shop broom the marks gone.

If all possible, I avoid turning on driveways and sidewalks. Also I notice you are turning in the wrong direction. If all possible, shoot grass clippings into the lawn, not towards the driveway, sidewalks and/or street. As far as turning on turf, I make 3 point turns if all possible. If done correctly, little to none grass clippings to blow off hard surfaces.

Mulch kits here as well, it just depends on the property for me. I try to stay on the turf when its feasible but, we end up using the side walks when necessary. If anyone is paying attention to this, do not ever try to mulch wet leaves or clippings on any surface other than something natural or it will leave you a nasty mess you'll end up needing a pressure washer to get rid of. Ive learned the hard way. I don't like turning around on concrete or asphalt because that is the fastest way to kill tires on a mower.

Good vaild points. I agree both works depending on the situation and operater experience. but I prefer drive way if possible. I would tell my crew of they have to turn on the grass mow in a different direction and take time and watch how you turn.
