Oliver Mackenzie is a massive fan of The Last of Us, putting him in prime position to analyse the big improvements made to the remastered edition, as seen on PS5. Big boosts to detail, lighting animation and character rendering set the PS5 version apart from its predecessors - but it's in the comparisons to The Last of Us Part 2 that we perhaps get a better idea of what this new version will deliver.

Hope you guys are going to do a deep dive on the big raytracing updates for RE2, RE3 and RE7. I've been playing RE2 and the quirky lighting issues are completely gone with raytracing enabled. It's a significant improvement.

EDIT: Since this ended up a top comment I thought I'd mention that Nvidia put out a Game Ready driver specifically for these updates today.

Really want that workbench mechanics from Part II to make it over to the remake. Being able to upgrade your guns in real time was one of the best features in the sequel just because it was so well done.

The changes in gameplay are probably going to be the main selling point for this remake than anything visual. TLOU2's gameplay was great and porting that over to this would make me buy it.

Let's take a moment to appreciate Oliver's work on this video! Some top-notch stuff there! 🙌

It’s only by seeing them side by side that I’m able to fully absorb the huge improvements. Watching the trailer in a vacuum was difficult because it’s how my brain remembers the original looking anyway. Really cool.

The Last Of Us is one of my favourite games of all time. Back in mid 2019 I unfortunately lost my vision, and thought at the time that my days of playing games was over. With the launch of TLOU2 however, and it’s incredible suite of accessibility options - I was able to completely finish the game myself with zero sighted assistance, which was an incredible moment for myself and many other disabled folks. Given some of the people heading the production of this remake in addition to the blog they posted around the announcement - it seems as though this version of the game will include the same options - which, if is the case would open the game to be played by not only the blind - but also gamers with disabilities across the board. Personally, I don’t find that redundant at all.

4:17 Thats because Naughty dog said they reused the motion capture data from 2013 game, and just improved/tweaked it for the remake in the cutscenes to be even more realistic by todays standards

I love this game, bought the PS3 and PS4 games, but can I justify buying it again? Yes, but only when it comes down in price though. Looks incredible, the music always transports me back to playing it for the first time.

The original looked so good in my memories that I initially thought they didn’t change much. Damn I was wrong.

Okay yeah now looking at this... Playing the part 1 remake and part 2 straight after will be like one full fluid experience now with how similar they are. They've done a really good job and improved massively! Wow

If they do bring TLOU 2 combat and gameplay to this, I'll be overjoyed.

Is the remake necessary? No. Is it nice to have? Absolutely. I suspect with the HBO TV series coming along very soon they know people will want to play the original and they just wanted to bring it up to par with TLou2.

The funny Thing about this Remake is that I remember my first playthrough to look and feel exactly like the remake. Nostalgia living live and well 😅 so excited!

Oliver is probably never going to read this. But in the scene with the infected foe, take a look at the hand joint of Joel. there is a massive improvement and probably a change in animation there. There is a noticable reduction in the bent of the joint and the overall realism of how Joels body works here is way higher. The overall animations are way more nuanced with more detailes even here like everywhere else in the game. with suttle shifts of the hand positions because of how the infected is wriggling and Joels hands are not stuck at a fixed point at the infecteds neck.

I hope this means that from 2023 onward, PS Studios will focus exclusively on PS5, because I think graphically we still haven't seen what the platform can really do (think end gen graphics and physics results).

Is it fair to criticize the price? Absolutely
Is it fair to criticize this game is unnecessary? Absolutely
But you lose me if you say you don’t see a difference lol. With that said, I won’t be purchasing this at full price. I’ve played this game many times and I’m in no rush to replay

If we are not getting any advanced upscaling method and just native 1440p for the 60 fps mode, I hope we at least get a 4K VRR mode. If native 4K is possible for around 40 fps with VRR enabled for drops it would be amazing.

we don't need remake. We need ideas

Ya know...this makes me really appreciate the original. Those 2013 graphics look AMAZING still, even compared to recent AAA games.

I’ve played part 1 enough times to know every detail in and out from memory. I am so unbelievably excited to be able to gather just a sliver of exploration back to that masterpiece of a game.
