There’s a story from Vietnam about an army chaplain that drove over a bridge in the middle of an intense firefight between the Air Cavalry and NVA. Battle had about 5, 000 casualties on both sides, and the man drove right over the bridge while artillery was coming down trying to destroy it. Apparently he was singing a hymn while driving and didn’t even notice the battle till after he saw medical units rushing past him down the road.

That grimace before the look down was really just “Who the hell snitched?”

We didn't have a Chaplain like this on my first ship, but we did have a very old Commander as our Chief Engineer. When we visited the Philippines for their 50th anniversary of the victory over the Japanese Empire, the Admirals that came on board saluted him and called him "Sir" with a great deal of respect. He had twice as many ribbons as the oldest of them and called them all by their first names, so I imagine he'd been there and done all of that.

Had one of the greatest chaplains on the first deployment. Still remember, while we were still in Quait, there was a boxing tournament (big gloves and not much skill) and there was only one K.O. that night witch was courtesy of the chaplain. This was not the kind where you count to ten, the other guy was out. We all lost our shit, chanting "Chaplain, Chaplain". There was a girl that asked "why do you guys call him Chaplain?" "Cause he is." Even as an Atheist, got nothing but respect, the man never even said a work before picking up a shovel.

The enemy has fortified positions, armor and air cover.
Chaplain smith grimaces, spits in the mud and says "guess ill go alone, keep things even, Lord, you ready?"

Reading these comments, it warms my heart to see vets, fans of 40k and maybe even Vet fans of 40k all coming together.

We had one back in the late 90’s who had received the Navy Cross in Vietnam and it involved using an E-tool in combat. I’ve got to find that warrant.

Why do chaplains always have the most badass stories?

Can't imagine how much these elderly legends cause a stir. Got tens of thousands of 18-25 year olds all in one place and then this guy shows up who has been a soldier twice as long as they've been alive and is still active in a role and holding a rank.

I was on a DLG that was on CAP on Yankee Station. In 1969 during our second tour we had a E-9 Boatswain Mate who had originally joined the Navy in 1933 shipping out on the battleship Oklahoma. He retired with 30 in 1964. Recalled to service in 1967 he ran small boats on th Mekong before being assigned to our ship to get more sea time. I remember onetime when he was criticized by a ROTC JG about the condition of some of his ribbons. "You have to understand Lieutenant the country that gave me thise medals doesn't excist anymore"...

A Chaplin completely changed my life after my deployment in 06. Long story short, he found me sitting by myself at my unit one day when it was snowing outside. He walked up and asked me if I would pray with him. We walked out into the snow, he put his hand on my shoulder, and he prayed to Jesus Christ that he would heal me, and for him to take me off all drugs the VA had me on, and so much more.

That was the last day I took those antidepressants from the VA hospital and I never looked back. I didn’t have to ween off them or any of that and I had been on them for almost two years. He changed my life and he showed up out of nowhere. It was like he was sent by God to come see me.
