I'm 67 and grew up using nothing but wood bats - always ash, there were no maple bats, about $5-$7 to buy new - from little league through college. Never encountered a metal bat until playing softball in my late 20's. Because of that I've always found the thunk of hitting a ball solidly off a wood bat much more satisfying than the piddly ding of metal.

I always liked using wood bats the most, but never played with them in a game unless we were in a wood bat tournament. Always practiced with one though, if you can hit good with a wood bat, you can definitely hit good with aluminum

I remember this only happened one time when I played rec league ball. The first thing you notice is how different the bat sounds. The next thing you notice is the kid getting thrown out at first because he hit a grounder to short.

The kid played with a metal bat for the rest of the game after that.

I exclusively used a wooden bat in Little league as well as Bronco BB. when you hit the ball, there’s a “crack” that you feel more than you actually hear that makes the learning curve of a wooden bat 100% worth it. I also didn’t find them to be that much heavier.
