As someone who knows what it's like to be bitten not once but four times by a single black widow, I must say you earned my respect. Widow venom is a neuro toxin. Drop for drop widow venom is 15× more potent than a diamond back rattlesnake. The symptoms of a bite at first are those of a heart attack. Severe shortness of breath, chest pain, then tummy pain, nausea, I had a fever over 105° severe muscle pain. Convulsing, then worse paralyzed from the waist down. After numerous vials of antivenin symptoms improved however the paralysis lasted months. It's the same with the copperhead bite I had, critters are not out to get us. They do not go out of their way just to attack us. If they bite it's because we accidentally come into contact with them. If you felt threatened by something hundreds of times bigger than you would you not try to protect yourself too?

Yeah I'll always have the phobia...has nothing to do with if they're out to kill me or not.

I have always had an affinity for arachnids esp spiders. Currently, I have 4 tarantulas and Coyote is right...you can handle them if you stay calm. It's all about the vibration.

I got gobs of them around my house. Territorial and don’t wander. They stay in same spot. Very fast in their “tangled” webs. Fascinating and beautiful creature. I don’t touch the big ones but the babies sometimes crawl on me when I relocate them. SoCal.

Well you've held a black widow are you going to hold a redback in Australia or is it to venomous to handle?

For being plopped into a plastic box and taken from her web, she was very cooperative.

I’ve found black widow spiders to be fairly aggressive compared to most other spiders… particularly if you “bother” them. I’ve had numerous ones make a b line straight for me haha.

I have black widows in my flower beds I respect them an they keep to themselves they dont get rattled by my presence (unless I accidentally bump their housing then they just scurry an inch or so then they go back in just like letting me know ummmm hey trying to sleep here lol) ❤❤❤😂

I actually had a really rare thing happen to me. I didn’t really realize it at the time, but I was in the Catskills in New York State stacking wood (I was little and helping my dad) I saw a spider with a red pattern on its underside hiding in the wood pile. I had the good sense to get away from it. I did some research just now and I think the spider I saw could’ve been a black widow. Apparently there have been sightings further and further north lately, and although I’m skeptical, the spider I saw looked remarkably similar to a black widow.
