It’s Rei. She’s the designers designer. Her relentless vision is unmatched in pushing fashion forward still at age 79 more fiercely than her contemporaries. I’m assuming Margiela & van Herpen look to her being extremely influential in both of their careers, and while they done great work I don’t think it’d exist without the roads Kawakubo has paved. If you need any other convincing: Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body.

How can I compete with everyone’s flawless rebuttals. I’m just here to say, Bliss Foster is the best Fashion fashion storyteller of all time.

My all time favorite is Alexander McQueen. But as he is not a valid submission I have another one. Issey Miyake.

After listening to a podcast episode interviewing a former employee working with producing textiles, Issey Miyake became one of my favorites. There were teams of 6 (I believe) with the task of producing textiles for upcoming collections. There was a textile expert, philosopher and other people with vastly different expertises. They were given an office and complete freedom. They started out with one table and pens and started having discussions. They came up with concepts (like “this items is very fast and see through”) and had to find a way to turn that into a textile. They found out it wasn’t possible with current machines so they started making their own and programming them themselves to produce specific pieces of fabric. It’s all insane to me.

It must be Rei Kawakubo for sure, in my humble opinion. Her creations have been uncompromising, courageous, always from the heart, new and strong, something that makes one aware of their existence. Someone who has not been influenced or affected or swayed by others, always carving her own path.. creative not only with making exciting clothes but also creative as a businesswoman, equally strong as both. She's challenged herself so much in search of finding new ways to express her thoughts, never repeating a technique twice, and this is a difficult aim. So much respect, she is a role model and for me, definitely the best designer currently living!

How has nobody mentioned Helmut Lang? Everything he did up to 2005 continues to shape high fashion and streetwear today, and will continue to do so in the future. No other designer has elevated casual wear into high fashion the way he has. May not be in the realm of Rei, Iris and Margiela, but he deserves to be in the conversation at least

I'd like to appropriate your thesis on Iris Van Herpen and apply it to Issey Miyake, with the more impressive pretext of his textile innovations existing nearly 2-3 decades before major industry developments in the 21st century. That, as well as Miyake's shared vision with IVH, of idiosyncrasies in the womenswear space(s) that surpass notions of conventional beauty in the pursuit of transcendental forms and dynamic movement.

There wouldn’t be an Iris Van Herpen without Hussein Chalayan but she’s great in her own right.

I’ve never really taken an interest in fashion but this video peaked my interest and honestly your passion and love for it is infectious. This is an amazing video, you’ve gained a fan and fashion has gained a fan.

I almost shed a tear when you finally brought up Martin for some reason I felt like you really weren’t. The simplicity of his identity, his innovation and his creative way of being 1 with his aesthetic and his message has an immense impact on the generation then and even the generations to come

Maybe not best designer, but I think Rick Owens is the best RTW designer? Rei and Margiela are so inspiring, but not very accessible. What I love is that Rick is many’s first step into avant-garde clothing. I’m sure a lot of your viewers can empathize with seeing Rick for the first time, seeing how amazing the world of menswear *could* be and being inspired to dive SO much deeper into fashion. Like, the kiss boots are this perfect invitation for men to take a deep breath and try on a traditionally femme garment for the first time. I think while everyone else you mentioned does amazing work what sticks with me most about Rick Owens is that he can simultaneously capture the imagination of the high fashion world and the middle school hypebeast checking Grailed for the first time. His runway work is obviously incredible and I love that my opinion of him has never shifted - no matter how much I learn about fashion his work continues to amaze me. His RTW pieces bridge the gap between the runway and the laypersons closet beautifully, so much of his stuff is a technical marvel, and I need to mention his womenswear is also INCREDIBLE. But what really makes him special to me is just seeing firsthand how his work inspires so many men to break out of their shells and daydream about a world where they can dress like edgy goth sluts. I don’t think another living designer has opened the minds of the general public like that

I would add John Galliano to the top 5, with Rick Owens. Viv Westwood in top 8. Galliano is one of my personal favourites

Bliss?? Your name makes too much sense. Too much bliss from you. I’d love to be able to contribute more to the discussion but sadly my knowledge is too limited to feel like I could offer a proper rebuttal. Just wanted to appreciate the consistent passion you radiate into the world with these videos.

To me one of the best designers is here in America, Ralph Rucci, his couture is well executed, using the best fabrics and he knows how to cut and create timeless style!

Edit: John Galliano is the GOAT. most specifically because he IS the zeitgeist. Lemme elaborate: designers are known to have their pulse on society and culture. And a lot of them hop on that cultural flow quite quickly. However galliano makes culture. He started during the London club scene and emerged with the new romantics in which he exemplified their aesthetic. And then during the mid 90s he turned to bias cut slip dresses which became a swinging hit. Then as soon as the 00's hit he turned to experimental cutting and hip hop which was the time where he made the saddle bag. His career was just one hit after another. When we discuss great designers I feel like the ones that come up were a league of their own (like marg or rick and so forth) that kinda became part of mainstream culture later on. But for me, galliano was and still is at the front of the culture flow steering the train himself tooting up one hit after the other. Constantly changing but always staying up top.

I have such fondness for Iris Van Herpen- she, more than anyone else, pushes the fashion/art boundaries, and her technological innovations are second to none. I’m excited to see where she can go from here.
