For most Latin American countries, America is one continent, divided in 3: North America, Central America and South America.

I didn't know Greenland was a part of North America. It's obvious now, but I've never connected the two

America is a continent not a country. United States is a country but some people still don’t know.

América no es tan solo los Estados Unidos. El hecho de que los estadounidenses impongan a los demás ese sentido de la palabra es denigrante. Además, revela la actitud histórica y política que Estados Unidos ha mantenido resspecto de las otras naciones americanas.

The original maps from the 16th and 17th centuries, when the continent was named, refer exclusively to South America as America, while naming North America Terra Icognita.

In South America they see north and South America as one

Absolutely! In the broadest sense, anyone born in the Americas—North, Central, or South—can be called "American." This includes Peruvians, Argentines, Canadians, Mexicans, and more. However, in English, the term "American" is most commonly used to refer to citizens of the United States, which can sometimes lead to confusion or debates about its usage. In Spanish, "americano" traditionally refers to anyone from the Americas, but regional interpretations may vary. For example, in Latin America, "estadounidense" is often used to specifically describe people from the United States, while "americano" retains its broader meaning.

North America is an invention of the anglophone culture
Americas is a full continent from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego
South America is not a continent, it’s also part of the Americas
The USA has no name because is the country where many old colonies joined the Union that later became the United States of America ( the continent)

The term 'America' originally referred to the entire landmass of North and South America. While today, we often use 'North America' and 'South America' as separate continents, historically, 'America' encompassed the entire Western Hemisphere.
Given this, it could be argued that citizens of the United States should have a distinct term, perhaps 'United Statesian'
