This Is Why You Don't Want to Fly into a Microburst

A microburst is one of the smallest -- and most deadly -- kinds of storms; and before the technology for detection was invented, they were nearly impossible to defend against.

My grandfather; Captain Gary Gore was the captain of Flight 663, bound for Las Vegas on May 31, 1984 at 1:34 p.m.

He saved all 104 passengers and all crew from a microburst at takeoff from the Stapleton Airport in Colorado.

Thanks delta 191 for your contribution. You will never be forgotten.

My Mother and Step Father were on D191. The only reason they survived was because they were sitting in the back. As I was an engineering student at the time, I could not help but ask about every second of what they encountered. At first some of my family told me to leave them alone. But, oddly enough, they wanted to tell me. Finally they were asked to testify before congress and this is what led to the DOPPLER that is now on every aircraft.

Wow...the dialogue between the pilots was almost word for word what was recorded during the flight, up until the crash!

My Atmospheric Science professor was working in Tennessee at the time, he and the team he was working with got called by the FAA after this crash to be asked questions. He ended up being part of the team at the University of North Dakota that helped create better warnings and detection of microbursts.

2:13 The actors breathing in sharply in response to the plane going up and down plus the filming of that scene seriously made my stomach feel like it was on a roller coaster, and I got dizzy, too. The filming of this documentary series is beyond incredible! I always feel like I'm right there on the plane with them.

I think it's safe to say that 191 is a *really* unlucky flight number. American 191 Crashed, Delta 191 Crashed, Aeroflot 191 Crashed, and some more minor crashes had number 191 as well.

Will never forget that day. My husband and I both worked for airlines that shared a building on the north end of DFW. We had just left work when we looked back and saw the big cloud of black smoke. My boss was sitting at his desk and saw the whole thing.

It happens. No one can stop it. Risk is everywhere.

On this plane were Don Estridge, an American computer engineer who led development of the original IBM Personal Computer (PC), and thus is known as the "father of the PC revolution". His decisions dramatically changed the computer industry, resulting in a vast increase in sales of personal computers, thus creating an entire industry of hardware manufacturers of IBM PCs. Steve Jobs offered Estridge a multimillion-dollar job as president of Apple Computer but he declined. Estridge and wife Mary Ann were killed in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on August 2, 1985. He was 48 years old. The Estridges were survived by their four daughters. At the time of his death, IBM ESD, which included the development and manufacturing of the IBM PC, PC DOS, PC LAN and TopView, had nearly 10, 000 employees and had sold over a million PCs.

I got caught in a microburst walking down the street one night. I watched it rolled down out of the sky. It looked like a giant was unrolling a massive white carpet and the wind was terrifying.

the pilot that said "you are going to lose it all of the sudden" KNEW of the microburst and did the right thing but the problem was their altitude was too low to recover. the plane was going to crash no matter what, maybe if there had not been the two water tanks they might have survived a fatal crash but who knows. 2:43 the tail section broke off and those people survived with 2 people having no injuries but the front and mid section got the full blast and everyone died

Everytime I watch ANYTHING about Delta 191, all I can do is think of my cousin who was travelling from Ft. Lauderdale back to Los Angeles after visiting our grandparents. He was 13 years old. R.I.P. Seth Katz, Los Angeles, CA 1972-1985.

When I flew Delta for the first time since the mid-90's it was on a flight from JFK-Barcelona, Spain back in 2015. I drank throughout the ENTIRE flight because I got so nervous. And I'm not usually a nervous flier AT ALL. Get me on a Delta flight though and I FREAK OUT. 😭🥺🙄
