Volkswagen Passat vs Skoda Superb vs Opel Insignia Grand Sport

We put the newly revamped #Skoda #Superb and #VW #Passat against the #Opel #Insignia to see which large family car is best

There was once a time when anyone wanting a large family car would go searching for a spacious saloon – but thanks to the huge choice in the market in 2019 those days are over. That doesn’t mean the large family car class is gone, though, and in fact two of the best models in this market sector have recently been updated by their respective makers: the Skoda Superb and the Volkswagen Passat.
An additional highlight is the newly developed 2.0 TDI Evo - a highly efficient turbo diesel engine with an output of 110 kW / 150 PS that produces 10 g/km less CO2 compared with the equivalent engine in the predecessor. The 2.0 TDI Evo is the forerunner of a new generation of diesel engines. The powerplant range also includes three petrol engines (TSI) with 110 kW / 150 PS, 140 kW / 190 PS, and 200 kW / 272 PS as well as three diesel engines (TDI); the latter deliver 88 kW / 120 PS, 140 kW / 190 PS, and 176 kW / 240 PS respectively. All TSI and TDI units fulfil the requirements of the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard.

In addition to the plug-in hybrid drive available for the new ŠKODA SUPERB iV, there is a choice of six other engines which all fulfil the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard. There are ten different engine/drive combinations to choose from. The 1.6 TDI producing 88 kW (120 PS) is fitted with a 7-speed DSG as standard. For the 2.0 TDI delivering 110 kW (150 PS) - the first TDI from the latest EVO generation - the power is transmitted by either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG. The top-of-the-range 2.0 TDI diesel offering 140 kW (190 PS) comes with a 7-speed DSG as standard and all-wheel drive is optional. All three diesel engines are equipped with an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection and a diesel particulate filter. The 1.5 TSI outputting 110 kW (150 PS) is the entry-level petrol engine and is available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG. The new 2.0 TSI outputting 140 kW (190 PS) features a 7-speed DSG as standard; the top-of-the-range 2.0 TSI delivering 200 kW (272 PS) comes with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed DSG as standard.

ŠKODA has slightly modified the exterior of the SUPERB and has carefully refined the front section. The redesigned front bumper means the car's length has increased by 8 mm to 4,869 mm in the ŠKODA SUPERB, and by 6 mm to 4,862 mm in the ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI. The wheelbase measures 2,841 mm, whilst the car's width is 1,864 mm. Its height is 1,469 mm, or 1,477 mm in the estate. By offering a boot capacity that ranges from 625 to 1,760 l in the ŠKODA SUPERB.

Rear-seat occupants also greatly benefit from the reworked proportions and enjoy more space. The Insignia Grand Sport trunk volume of 490 to 1,450 liters is quite impressive, while the new Sports Tourer offers a maximum of 1,665 liters - over 130 liters more than the outgoing model.

The engine portfolio starts with a newly designed extremely efficient gasoline unit, the 1.5-liter Turbo with 103 kW/140 hp and 121 kW/165 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 7.3 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.8-4.7 l/100 km, combined 5.7 l/100 km; 130-129 g/km CO2; NEDC fuel consumption Sports Tourer urban 7.7-7.5 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.3-4.8 l/100 km, combined 6.2-5.8 l/100 km, 141-132 g/km CO2).

The 2.0-liter Turbo delivers 191 kW/260 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 11.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 7.1 l/100 km, combined 8.6 l/100 km; 197 g/km CO2; NEDC fuel consumption Sports Tourer urban 11.5 l/100 km, extra-urban 7.1 l/100 km, combined 8.7 l/100 km, 199 g/km CO2). The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder unit comes in combination with the completely new eight-speed automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly, and a highly sophisticated all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring.

The propulsion offering for the Grand Sport is rounded off by the new six-speed manual transmission for the popular 1.6-liter diesel engines with outputs of 81 kW/110 hp and 100 kW/136 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 5.1-4.6 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.9-3.6 l/100 km, combined 4.3-4.0 l/100 km; 114-105 g/km CO2). Above this comes the refined 2.0-liter diesel, which will also be available for the Sports Tourer at launch, with 125 kW/170 hp (NEDC fuel consumption Grand Sport: urban 6.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3 l/100 km, combined 5.2 l/100 km; 136 g/km CO2; NEDC fuel consumption Sports Tourer urban 6.9 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3 l/100 km, combined 5.3 l/100 km, 139 g/km CO2). A wider selection of diesel engines will be available for the station wagon variant soon.
