A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal found that women who used NuvaRing or other hormonal contraceptives containing third-generation progestins were at a higher risk of developing blood clots than those who used contraceptives with second-generation progestins. Blood clots can sometimes cause heart attacks or stroke.

Another study published in 2017 in the journal JAMA Cardiology found that women who used hormonal contraceptives had a slightly higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those who did not use them. However, the risk was still relatively low compared to other factors like smoking and high blood pressure.
