In Japan you literally get the water the moment you sit down.
In Germany it's like ''wanna pay as much for water as you'd pay for a coke 😀''

One time I was on a student trip to Berlin and me and my friend went to a fancy pizza restaurant. The pizza was good but so expensive and we were mega poor, so we skipped the drinks. The waiters could clearly see we were poor so they came with a can of ice water after seeing we were struggling. Very nice of them.

Fun fact : In France it is legally mandatory for restaurants to be ready to offer free Water AND bread if anyone demands it.
(the latter is much less common, but it often translates with a lot of restaurants directly bringing a small bread basket right after you sit down).

If anything the German waiter showed a lot of restraint!

Very accurate! I was on holiday in Cologne and asked for tap water (since this is perfectly normal & acceptable in the UK!) and the waiter SHOUTED at me. Horrible 😢

In the Swabian Region we say. "Umsonscht isch bloß dr dod, ond der koschtets läba"

Translated to Standard German: Umsonst ist nur der Tod, und der kostet das Leben

Translated to English:
"Only dying is free, but it still costs youre life"

This was brilliant, especially considering the music in the background, the piano just before the splash. Absolutely brilliant.

In Austria it's normal to ask for tap water. And they normally bring you a glass of water with coffee

yeah, the concept of the complementary Glass of water is a foreign concept in germany. I live there.

Yeah, it's always frustrates me... We have the best tap water... Why don't serve it in restaurants... I even agree on a little fee(50cents?), because the waiter don't work for free... But always i have to buy a glass of bottled water which cost around 2, 5€ the same amount like coke... Just Why.... I love it in France and so many other countries, where you can order your free tap water... Often it is one, even without ordering, on your table... Because at home i also just drink tap water for dinner... Why i have to change that in a restaurant...

Honestly if you want some tap water ask for some water because you have to take some medicine, and you are going to order something else later.

In Germany we don't say:

"This subject is very important to remember for the class test."

We say:

"WENN ICH EUCH UM 3 UHR NACHTS DIES FRAGE, MÜSST IHR MIR DIES, WIE AUS DER PISTOLE GESCHOSSEN, BEANTWORTEN KÖNNEN!"

I love how enthusiastic he always is, 😃 just doing his thing, trying to be nice in an unknown situation. And then he gets caught completely blindsided just as all hell breaks loose. 🥴 This was truly a sacrilege! 😄💧 Would not recommend.
