Commidifying human interaction means building relationships actually alienates people instead of truly bringing them together. The concept and ideals of friendship have become so shallow and self-interested now. diseases of despair like depression have been on a distinct rise in this century. Social media is not the sole factor but it is definitely A factor. YouTube is the only platform I use to try to limit the negative impact of constant comparison and to conserve my energy for the people and things that actually deserve it

Saying social media is bad for society is as dumb as saying cars are bad for society. It's a tool, it doesn't have a mind of it's own, it's only as good/bad as people who are using/controlling it.

Social media is toxic and has had a major role in fueling the rightward shift of our society. There's no question about that but I do think that the effect is magnified in the States due to a population that has been systematically dumbed down by our government's attack on public education. So social media is stoking an already blazing fire. I keep my Facebook account active only because I have maybe 2 very important friends in my life that I no longer live near and FB is how we communicate. If it weren't for them I would be off in a heartbeat.

To each their own . I like to read and be informed . I suppose it depends on what you’re talking about . Much of the negative attitude towards social media has been programmed into people by legacy media trying to remain relevant in an already fragmented media market .

Social media as it exist is controlled by corporates with their own privacy abuses and misinformation algorithms. You need more ownership of our social media if it can have a positive effect on society.

Social media has been the worst thing that has happened to society. It has nothing social about it. It is pretty much a new way to boost your ego.

Yep especially for children social media giants should remove likes from posts on Children’s accounts. Kids are now bullying each other over how many likes they have. And their popularity is now determined on their social media presence.

Is television bad for society? What about radio? Print? How about stories and songs? The evolution of human communication ability is baked into our DNA. What we do with it, is our choice. Whether we make those choices consciously or subconsciously; and determining if those choices have basis in reality or fiction is a great challenge for our species.

I wonder how many people voted "negative" and then went back onto FaceBook. lol But seriously, when radio and TV came into being, society realized the potential awesome power of the media. Society decided that no one should effectively "own" certain frequencies. Radio and TV bandwidth were seen as public goods that should be monitored for everyone. However, in the 1990s, as the internet developed, Bill Clinton took the neoliberal position that all things can be turned into a commodity and bought and sold with few limitations. His FCC act has turned into a disaster and, ironically, helped create the RW smear machine that got him impeached.
