Cheers to my 200th video here on the channel! I know that the Alice In Chains content has been sparse lately so I hope this (mostly) unedited hour-long reaction helps a bit to make up for it. I will go back to editing my videos in their usual style but for this particular album it just seemed right to not cut the songs up into shorter clips. And a huge thanks for all of the amazing suggestions and thoughtful comments that y’all leave me, they do not go unnoticed ❤

One part of the original performance that the album cut out was their first attempt at Sludge Factory. Layne flubbed the first verse, and it seemed like he took it really hard for a second until Jerry chimed in with "We're allowed a couple of those, it's been a while." You could see the encouragement prop Layne up a bit, even jokingly retorting to a heckler "What's my motivation here?" before they dropped back into the song.

The whole video of the concert is filled with little moments like that. Their little jokes, Jerry looking at Layne and making sure he's ok, and the smile he gives the other band members when Layne nails some of the high notes. It was so sad to see Layne in such a haggard state, but those moments from Jerry and the others warm my heart every time I go to rewatch the concert. Truly one of the most unique and magical musical experiences I've ever experienced.

I would recommend watching the video version of this performance. Seeing the band adds a deeper dimension to this performance. Layne is pretty emaciated and strung out, but he still manages to make singing his parts look effortless.

Can we give a round of applause for Molly hitting 40k? You deserve it. It's been a joy watching and listening to the way you break music down; if you didn't tell people you weren't a musician, people almost might think you were. You've always had an understanding of this stuff and that's what always kept me coming back. Looking forward to where your journey takes you in terms of bands. May I selfishly recommend my personal favorite artist; TesseracT? I hope to see them pop up sometime in the future. And whatever you've been going through; you don't have to explain, but I just want you to know that even though we sometimes feel alone, we're not always as alone as we think we are. I'll always be cheering for you.

The best MTV Unplugged of all time. R.I.P. Layne Staley 🤘

„Fun“ fact is that Jerry suffered from food poisoning at this recording, felt nauseous throughout and had an emergency bucket next to him 😬😳 Stone cold pro

Congrats on 200! What a way to celebrate. I think for those of us that have been lifelong Alice in Chains fans this performance illicits a lot of mixed feelings. It was painful to watch Layne diminished from struggling with his addiction but it was also heartening to see and hear how well the band still played together, and how beautiful their music translated to a fully acoustic set. Nutshell is an all-time performance, just a gut punch but man is it beautiful. I'll always be partial to the performances of Heaven Beside You and Over Now. It was like Jerry's coming out party for being a proper frontman, and foreshadowed his solo projects. I'm biased but it'll always be my favorite unplugged session. Mostly because Layne was living the pain in these songs yet the band still supported each other. This music mattered, it mattered to the artists as much as the fans, these weren't rock gods or fabricated personalities, they were just people, raw, vulnerable, but confident and talented enough to nail the tone or vibe of these songs. Even when they messed up some things, they never lost the atmosphere. I still remember watching this when it aired as a teen and just being hypnotized the whole time. I still feel the same way about it today that I did back then, just a special moment. Their musicianship was just on another level from the other bands of the era. They were the most cohesive sonically of the Seattle bunch imo. This is a timeless recording, so glad you took the opportunity to revisit it. I appreciate the amount of thought you put into your reactions to new music. Such a healthy perspective, wish you all the success in the world with your channel 🫶

Thanks Molly, I love your genuine reaction. I recommend watching this performance when you get a chance. Highlights the special chemistry between the band, especially Layne and Jerry. Sadly, I suspect they all knew time was running out for him. RIP.

The end of "No Excuses" where they do a bit of "Enter Sandman" is a nod to Metallica, who were in the audience for the show. Mike Inez's wrote "Friends don't let friends get haircuts" on his bass to further tease the band, who has recently chopped off their long hair.

Such a great album though. AiC works so well acoustically.

You NEED to watch this performance. It's on YT. Layne was pretty much "on his way out" during this recording. Their first performance in years. Sad to see him this way.

I don’t know how I found this so recently.. but thank you so much for doing the AIC unplugged album. I really enjoyed this album, even if it was the most heartbreaking. Rest in peace, Layne.
