The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann has teased the planned second season of HBO's The Last of Us with a promo poster hinting at the introduction of the sure-to-be controversial Abby Anderson.
The first season of The Last of Us concluded last Sunday with a powerful finale, but the critically-acclaimed series has already been renewed for more episodes, and co-creator Neil Druckmann has now shared what appears to be some early promo art for the second season. The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
To help fans get through the first week of not having new episodes, The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann shared an illustration on his official Twitter assuring fans about Season 2. Yet, the image seems to tease a certain character, showing an arm that matches Abby's muscular physique, as seen in the 2020 sequel video game The Last of Us Part II. While he did not specifically confirm the identity of the owner of the arm, the creator further assured work for the next season was already well underway. "No [The Last of Us] on HBO tonight," he wrote. "But Season 2 is already on its way! Endure and survive!"
If you've played The Last of Us Part II, you'll know that this artwork is teasing the introduction of Abby Anderson, a somewhat controversial character who winds up becoming the game's secondary protagonist (or its primary antagonist, depending on your perspective).
So who is Abby Anderson? Abby is an imposing, formidable member of the WLF (Washington Liberation Front), who is obsessed with tracking down Joel for killing her father (the doctor that was preparing to operate on Ellie in the season finale).
In the original video game, Abby Anderson was the daughter of the Firefly head surgeon Jerry Anderson, who was revealed to have been one of the victims of Joel Miller's rampage at the end of The Last of Us Part I. Unable to move past the death of her father, she would eventually join the Washington Liberation Front and track down Joel several years later, at which point she brutally beat and executed him with a golf club. Abby's murder of Joel subsequently motivated Ellie Williams to chase after her in pursuit of her own revenge, which set the events of the sequel into motion.
Abby's introduction in The Last of Us Part II was one of the most polarizing elements of the sequel and still remains a controversial subject for the game's fanbase. While some fans of the franchise praised her character as a masterful subversion of expectations for the sequel, others were outraged at her actions and particularly dissatisfied.
