There are TWO DIFFERENT types of fraction that a two-part ratio can be expressed as. These two fraction types are different because they each describe a different type of relationship between the numbers in a ratio.
*Type 1: One part as fraction of the total.* (E.g. If the ratio of boys to girls is 1 : 4 then boys as a fraction of the total = 1/5).
*Type 2: The 1st part as a fraction of the 2nd part* as shown in the vid. (E.g. If the ratio of boys to girls is 1 : 4 then boys as a fraction of the girls = 1/4).
Most commenters who are saying that the video is “wrong” are merely referring to the other type of fraction, Type 1.

Well I think it will help people. I just finished my home work because of this video, her voice is very calm not to loud not to quite and it is clear to hear, Which is always easier to understand.

If you have 2 to 3 or 2:3 it should not be converted to 2/3. It should be converted to 2/5 of x and 3/5 of y. Ratio is comparing two things, that is key point compared to a fraction which is a portion of one thing.

Ratios are used for mixing things often like liquids or recipes. 2:3 means two parts of the whole are x and 3 parts of the whole are y. So you add 2 plus 3 to get 5, which is the whole denominator. Then if you want to express the whole as fractions you say 2/5 of it is x and 3/5 the of it is y.

Mariha I don't think you have to start out your videos presenting yourself as a mathematician. One who usually makes math videos would have some type of credentials that would represent their mathematical skill level. That being said, you present your material in an easy to understand manner which shows that you have the ability to carry out math instruction. Thanks for the video.

+MrApplewine You are wrong, when you are dealing with sloped planes and your rise over run is 1 to 12, 1:12
or 1/12, (which all means the same thing ) you can get your slope
percentage. This slope percentage is important when large trucks are
going down steep slopes, the driver needs to know what the percentage of
grade is so he can decide what gear to put his truck in before the
slope begins. If you have ever driven a car and you are going up or
coming down a steep hill you will see signs with the percent of slope on
the side of the road. Well this is the way the traffic engineers get
there information, they will find the rise over the run and in this case
the slope of the hill is 8%.
This same mathematical procedure is used for roofs, grading, water ways
and many other building procedures. Ratios are rather easy and taught
in grammar school, while it seems to me that most of the comments on
this channel are coming from adults it is truly embarrassing that this
great country's schooling system has declined to that of a third world
country.
