On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: San Martin – SN007-G V4 62MAS Homage vs. Seiko SBDC101 / SPB143

On this episode we take a look at one of the most compelling mechanical divers you can purchase under $250 in the 4th Generation version of San Martin's popular Seiko 62MAS homage line. This is a heavily recommended and controversial piece across YouTube, so it was only right that given the opportunity by the folks over at AliExpress to review something from their shop, I selected this one. No, it's not better than a genuine Seiko SBDC101 / SPB143 but at less than 1/4 of the price, does it really have to be? Let me know what you all think in the comments below, thanks guys!

San Martin just announced a 37mm version of this and is available now for order.

I actually bought the SBDC101 and thought I wanted something closer to the 62MAS, so I bought this V4 San Martin a few months ago fully intending to sell the SBDC, and pocketing the difference as I thought I would be just as happy with it.

In the end though, I felt the look of the bezel, whiter lume, and overall proportions, fit and finish off the SBDC won me over and I kept it and gave the San Martin to my brother-in-law as his first automatic... Really did like the look of bracelet of the San Martin over the Seiko though. Thought the bracelet quality was fantastic for the price as was the rest of the watch.

Thank you SO much for speaking as you did about that danged “Power Matic 80”. Swatch buys ETA, castrates the beautiful 2824-2 from 4hertz to 3. Now it sucks. Straight up money 💰 grab. No more watch makers. Just parts replacers. Bravo! BTW, aside from the sweep, my wear habits and how often I swap watches makes the whole power reserve bs just that……bs. Great review!

Great video. I have owned both and I agree with what you said. The San Martin is absolutely great, especially for the price. It was so good that I had to get the Seiko. I am also in a different part of my collecting, where I now prefer to have the brand name/ original manufacturer. So I got the Seiko and got rid of the SM and I got to say I don’t regret it. Both are very good watches with their own flaws, no bad choice either way. That being said, even with the price difference I prefer the Seiko. The Seiko in my opinion is just slightly better executed, and as it should be for the price difference.

Great to see these side by side! Thanks for doing this.

The dial and bezel is to compare to the 'real' reinterpretation of the seiko spb051/SLA017.
The crown has the hexagonal logo now, you didn't get the last version from them.
Agree I prefer the bevelled edges on the side profile case.
Would have been funny to compare endlinks adjustments between both watches :))
However, if it was not for the SanMartin, I would not have wanted to buy the 143. I now enjoy them both, for different reasons. But each are fantastic watches.

I enjoyed this review as much as the V3 versus. Great videos!
It’s funny that San Martin presented the reissue before Seiko.
The SM is actually closer to the original than the Seiko reissue. I can’t help but wonder since the SM was first and closer to the original that Seiko changed it up a little.
I have the older V4 version. Didn’t come with the new case. Old case is generic.
I find myself wearing the SM a lot. even over my other Seikos and Longines.
Oh, the lume is incredible to me.

I just ordered the San Martin version, and I am quite impressed with the fit, finish & quality. Absolutely affordable San Martin for less than $200, not so much for the Seiko for just around $1200. I understand why Seiko relaunched this version, but does it need to cost $1200, seriously. I'm a watch collector, but I absolutely will not drop thousands of $$$$ on watches.

Mine does have the fold clasp but the old dolphin crown. I kind a hated the polishing at the lug side, catching smears and finger print so I brushed it as I did the bracelet side. Love the watch, love the bezel but were better if they did SPB147 case style it is more rounded and the case side would get that lovely polish. BTW the dial on SM is like one piece with chapter ring, guess glued together for those who thought to mod it with other dials to think about.

Nobody (not even the Swiss) makes a sunburst gray dial as good as Seiko. For me its the Seiko, even though I'd take that San Martin to a Hamilton or any other $1000 watch out there

If you think that's good check out Seestern's version, ideally suited for those will a smaller wrist with a 37 mm case (38 bezel) The Prospex? Less said the better.

The seiko goes on chrono24 for <$700 brand new now (from japan). A brand new san martin is nearly as expensive when equipped with the sw200. I dont know why anyone would go for the fake.

I have this watch and I love it. However, the centrally placed dots in the bezel drive me crazy. They should have been close to the dial like Seiko does.

Great review!
I owned the SPB145 which is not as popular as the 143 which is a shame because I find the brown-greyish dial of the 145 to make it very charming.

Great vid brother. I love seiko and their designs. But I just don't get the prices they are demanding while skimping on quality. For example no signed Crown, no bordered date window or colour matched window, no ceramic bezel and still a movement that isn't closely regulated as an sw200 or eta. If san martin can do it why can't seiko.

I haven't bought a seiko in 3 years because of this where before I bought at least 1 a year

I never figure out why people grip these watches your only paying $241 what do you want if it bothers you buy the Seiko I’m happy with my San Martin

The green tint is definitely unfortunate.
I think San Martin would sell a lot more if they used a lume that was more white.

Still waiting for a homage to a vintage blancpain bathyscaphe. 37-38 mm. San Martin, give it a try?

Kinda disappointed that you only showed the homage on the wrist and no comparison with the spb

I genuinely think the San Martin looks better
