This video was captured in the Grasslands of Dhikala on a fine winter afternoon during Christmas 2019. The herds had more than 4 newly born baby elephants and hence were grazing in a defensive group setting. There were two male tuskers each at the front and back of the herd (not visible in this video) and one in the middle. This was to shield the babies from the apex predator in the grasslands, the Tigers. The calves stayed close to the mother and the mother walked slowly to match pace with the calf.

Jim Corbett National Park lies in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The magical landscape of Corbett is synonymous with Tigers. Established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park, Corbett has the highest number of tigers in the country. The first Project Tiger was first launched in 1973 in Jim Corbett National Park.

Jim Corbett is one of the few National Parks in India, which allows tourists to stay inside the jungle overnight, right in the lap of nature. Dhikala, the place seen in this video, is situated at the banks of Ram Ganga River.

Let’s talk about the Elephants of Dhikala now. Elephants, all over the world are well-known for their intelligence. Elephants families are led by females as they follow a strict Matriarchal Family Line. In any herd of Elephants, you see, females are the boss. Their intelligence has made them disciplined mammals and they walk in a single line when looking for food and water. Although, they are strongly bonded by their family ties, they may sometime separate due to ecological factors such as food, water availability. It is always a treat to watch Elephants in the wild and one must miss not chance of doing so.
