Sam Cooke wrote the song in late 1963 and it was recorded in the studio on January 30, 1964. He performed it live on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson on Friday, February 7, 1964 (the only known live performance he ever did of the song; unfortunately, film footage of this performance has not yet been found). "Change" was first released in the summer of 1964 on the RCA LP (vinyl record) entitled "Ain't That Good News." It wasn't released as a single until December 1964, when it was the "B" side to the 45 (vinyl single) release called "Shake." Dozens of outstanding artists have recorded this song over the years but nothing beats the original.
