I'm amazed that people have so many views of this doctrine.
Paul committed the unforgivable sin when he organized the persecution and murder of Spirit filled Stephen in Acts 7. Then God chose to forgive him anyway and use him as a pattern for unmerited grace. This is the reason we can confidently tell the worst of violent criminals that if they will trust in Jesus their sins will be forgiven, because God has set a precedent for forgiving the even worse sin of blaspheming His Spirit. 
Paul specifically says this and most people read right over it. In the following passage the word "chief" is from the greek word "protos". It means "first" and is where we get the word "prototype". How could Paul be saying he was the "first" sinner unless this understanding is correct?

1 Timothy 1:15-16
15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, FOR THIS REASON I obtained mercy, that in ME FIRST Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, AS A PATTERN to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.

This teaching is very unconvincing. John MacArthur says that refusing to acknowledge the Lordship of Christ is the unforgivable sin. But history is full of people who have refused to acknowledge the Lordship of Christ and have later found salvation and been forgiven.

A classic example is the apostle Paul, who persecuted Christians and most certainly refused to acknowledge the Lordship of Christ before being forgiven.

Nor will it do to say that the unforgivable sin is to remain in a state of refusing to acknowledge the Lordship of Christ until death, because ALL THE SINS of people who continue to refuse to acknowledge Christ until death will remain unforgiven. Therefore, the reason 'the blasphemy against the Spirit' (Matt 12:31 etc.) is unforgivable cannot be because of its lasting until death. It must differ from other sins in another way.
