Dude - I’ve fly fished for twenty years and when you were casting off the rock, you were actually double hauling… which is somewhat technically difficult for a beginner. Hats off fine sir… well done!

Being a Southern girl, we fished with a cane pole. My dad always had a rod and reel. In the Air Force, we had a buddy who was passionate about fly fishing. Some of the things we learned, which may of may not be true, the fly lure should simulate the flies hitting on the surface of water. We mainly fished for trout and arctic grayling in Alaska. You don’t really “catch” salmon, you snag it. There are rules for that too. Anyway excellent adventure! Thanks for bringing us along.

Xander, you picked up the double haul incredibly fast for a rookie. I've been fly fishing for several decades. It took me months of casting before I started double hauling. I never deliberately tried learning it, it just happened while I was regularly fly fishing. Here's a casting tip: Concentrate on feeling the rod load on the backcast. With a graphite rod, once you've got say 20' of line out, you can feel the line load the rod. Just backcast, pause, feel it load the rod, and then start your forward cast. Thanks for beautimus vids..

A tip. I seen it from the start, the hand you grip the rod with you're supposed to use your index finger to 'guide' the fly line while stripping the fly back. It keeps the line closer so you don't have to reach so far foreword to strip (at the rod guide like you were) you curl your index finger loosely to let the line slide through easily. Not bad for a start. When setting the hook, don't lift the rod like conventional gear, you strip set the hook because fly rods are not designed for lifting. Biggest fish for me on fly so far is a 160lb Tarpon. I fly fish Saltwater, Brackish and all types of Freshwater

Great video Xander. TY for sharing. I taught myself to fly-fish 40+ years ago. Casting is important for presentation. The Science is also important. Learn what fish are feeding on what insect and in what stage of growth, and you will outfish anyone, anywhere. Blessings all.

I completely feel your pain with fly fishing. I bought myself a rod and the struggle has been real. Great video as always!

This show I save for late nights to calm down. Been here for a long time. Glad to see the journey.

Fly fishing is a fickle friend while learning, taking more than giving. I found trolling with a fly was super productive, especially in a canoe.

It had to be hard for you to post that lost fish again while you were ice fishing! I will never forget your sorrow during that video. It made me appreciate what we harvest from this earth more. Always love the videos Xander!

Thanks Xander... I needed this this am... it was fun to watch and made me smile almost as wide as you did when you "caught" your first bass.
