"Buckaroo" is a corruption of the Spanish "Vaquero" which means cow handler and the Spanish word for "cow" is "vaca." You are quite correct; however, about the fact that Americans learned everything about handling cows from horseback from vaqueros, the original cowboys as you said. I congratulate you for that knowledge and your willingness to share it. "Cowboy, " on the other hand, is American English which described the boys, often slaves, who gathered the dairy cows.
