Maya was upset at the lunch table. Her favourite pasta, burger or pizza were missing. Grandpa saw that she was not eating much. He did not say anything to her. In the evening, he took Maya for a walk to the market.

They passed by a clinic, where many parents had brought their kids for treatment. Maya got curious, she asked Grandpa why the kids were there.

Grandpa explained that they were not eating their food properly and this made their bodies weak and they fell sick. Maya asked Grandpa if food was that important for the body. By that time they had reached the Children’s Park. But Maya was in no mood to play today. She wanted to know more about food. Grandpa told her that food is very important for our body.
• We need food to stay alive.
• We also need food to grow.
• We need food to repair our hurt body parts.
• We need food to work and play.

Maya asked Grandpa how could food do all this for us. Grandpa said — There are different kinds of food.
Some foods give us energy we need to work and play.
These are the Energy-Giving Foods.

Do You Know?
Energy-giving foods have carbohydrates.

Some foods make our muscles and body organs strong. They are called Body-Building Foods. They make us grow and can even help our body heal when it’s hurt.
For example: pulses, beans, eggs, milk, chicken, meat, fish.

Do You Know?
Body-building foods have proteins.

Some foods protect us from diseases and help us stay healthy. These are the Protective Foods. They help us fight infections.
For example: fruits and vegetables.

Do You Know?
Protective foods have vitamins.

Some foods provide strength to our bones and blood.
These are the Strength-Giving Foods. Strength-giving foods make us strong.
For example, fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, nuts etc.

Do You Know?
Strength-giving foods have minerals.

Maya was amazed to know that foods help our body to stay healthy and strong. They give us energy and help us grow.
Grandpa said that there are two more things to be added in this.
We must drink 8–10 glasses of water everyday.
Water helps in proper functioning of the body.
Roughage is the undigested fibre part of food. Roughage is thrown out of the body but it is good for bowel movement. Roughage is present in all these.
For example: orange, corn, beans, spinach, bitter gourd.

Grandpa told Maya that if we eat all types of food in our diet, it becomes a Balanced diet. Balanced diet keeps us healthy. Burger, pizza, french fries, chocolates, sweets are more of energy-giving foods but they do not have body building, protective or strength giving properties.

These are Junk Foods. They make you fat and weak. They make you obese. You can not fight infections and fall sick again and again.

Grandpa also told her that some foods like fruits are eaten raw. Some foods are cooked to make them soft and tasty. Foods can be boiled, baked, fried and roasted. Steamed food is the best. Some people overcook food. It kills all good parts of the food.

We must follow good eating habits and never waste food. The amount of food we throw away can fill some poor child’s stomach.
Maya promised grandpa that from then on she will eat balanced diet daily and have junk food only on special days. She also promised to follow good eating habits and never waste food.

That night on dinner table, mom, dad and granny were surprised that Maya was eating vegetables and pulses happily. They praised Maya for not making a fuss over food. Grandpa and Maya looked at each other and smiled secretly.
