Dead heads, or FLOATING logs are usually lost timber from logging operations. They float in the top of the water column, sometimes submerged, and will likely only damage the lower unit on the motor, not the boat. (Unless your really zipping along or your boats fiberglass). The 2nd image he showed was actually a dead tree, which isnt common place unless your boating in flood waters or your on an artificially made lake via damming of a river to create a flowage/lake.

An important thing you can add, if you see one of those you can poke a red or orange cloth to help others avoid it because like you mentioned it’s hard to spot. It’s not an obligation it’s just good seamanship. You are basically helping others spot the hazard.

In case anyone is curious, the reason these are so dangerous is because if you were to hit one at speed it could quite literally shear the bottom of the boat off.

This is why I go fishing with my Grandpa 99% of the time. Because he's got bad vision, I look out for them

For anybody wondering, a deadhead is a dead tree branch that has been waterlogged and is sitting in the ocean. These logs get weighed down to the point where they are only a few inches from the surface, and running into them with a boat (even if it is going slow) can severely damage or break your boat.

Not me paranoid about running into a dead head, even tho I know damn well I don’t go on boats anyway😭💀

I googled it so you don’t need to: Striking a deadhead even at slow speed can damage hull and propeller alike. At higher speed, or with a larger deadhead, it can breach the hull. Deadheads are found anywhere there is navigable water. There seem to be fewer deadheads in the open ocean, but likely that's because of the vastness of the oceans.

Edit: and… Striking underwater hazards such as a submerged rock, sunken island, shoal or deadhead may cause serious damage to your craft resulting in a breach of the hull. If the hull of your craft is breached, leaking and flooding will occur.

These could be logs, rocks, or basically anything. Definitely be careful around shore and in freshwater while boating, although depending on what boat your riding they may not be THAT threatening, like a single seater kayak might just glide over it or bounce off

Edit: Apparently people are special and don't realize that A. Rocks can be really big and B. Bodies of water actually have bottoms
