Minecraft: The List - Episode 10

The List is a series of Minecraft videos detailing how I would change Minecraft. It contains over 100 ideas and changes I would make if I made Minecraft. Throughout the years, several of these ideas have made it into Minecraft itself. Hopefully in a few more years many more of these ideas will be added. Today's episode covers things such as Ancient City Vaults, Mending Enchantment, Arrow types, and Banners just to name a few. I hope you enjoy this episode of The List!

The phantasmal item frame is the single best idea so far.. total game changer without having to use commands

One of the things I enjoy about these episodes is scenes from past Cubfan bases scattered throughout the episodes. Hey look, it's Cub's season 5 base filled with mob heads! Hey, that's the ConCorp country club! A little trip down memory lane.

One thing I think Mojang should really implement is being able to place blocks of tinted glass above beacons to make the Beacon beam invisible but still allows the beacon to function. I think a lot of people would like this option as well as it goes along with Mojang's theme of adding more functionality to pre-existing blocks in the game, and makes thematic sense with the current functionality of tinted glass.

Btw loving the video series! Hope a lot of your ideas get added.

I love how Cub can use the lacking functional use of the fletching table for so many things. Fav thing this episode would have to be; being able to put grass anywhere would be a dream come true for decorating!!

I feel like this is your most densely packed episode of The List to date, there's a lot of interesting ideas to talk about that deserve full attention, but right now I'll focus on your mending suggestions as it intrigued me a lot. I do for myself being annoyed at having to return to the End each time my tools are low, and my only ways to delay this is by just making new tools until I have to repair them all anyway, plus all the spare tools occupy a lot of space in a shulker box that could be used for something else.

I really think that your suggestion would not only address these issues, but also incentivize mining for minerals, providing more of a purpose for diamonds without having the hassle of enchanting new tools spare or replacement tools.

The issues I can see from this idea though is that if collection XP no longer repairs the tool, weapon, or armor, this would really impact how afk farms work and I suspect this would receive a lot of pushback from the technical player base as well as people who prefer the original ways of using XP to repair.
Another issue is that repairing netherrite items would be really painful consider their rarity. I know you can just grind or swim around in lava lakes for debris, but I'm not entirely sure I'd like to rely on mining in the nether just to repair items made with the rarest and most powerful material.
I think I would prefer your idea of using materials to repair an item indefinitely in an anvil as an option in addition to using XP to repair like it does today. I also like how your idea ties into improving how anvils work with getting around the infamous "Too expensive" limit.

If anything else about your change feels like a no-brainer that must be added, it's that mending items should be unbreakable but temporarily nonfunctional like the elytra does.

Cub, this series is so incredibly well considered and has maybe the best understanding of what makes Vanilla Minecraft that I've seen from someone suggesting additions. I've reacted out loud to almost every idea title card, either because they're so obvious when pointed out or because they're so simple it immediately makes sense. Your in-depth explanations are always so well put together and always convince me why adding them to the game would be a net positive, even if I don't like it. Also, the zoom out on a wall of fletching tables in the intro makes me laugh every time. All around, this series is great and I wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you've clearly put into it!

I don't necessarily think mob heads should be the draw to the ancient cities, but I will agree that the loot tables, in general, need some rebalancing and beefing up; there is far too much overlap with what is "valuable"

I wasn't sure about the warden mob head change, but the line at 5:47 really convinced me.
I also like the mending changes, 9/10 times I'd much rather just use my excess diamonds for repairs rather than sit at my skeleton grinder for 10 more minutes

12:11 I like the idea of an enchantment that prevents your tool(s) from breaking. I don't like changing mending though. Adding a new enchantment to do what you describe, possibly mutually exclusive with mending, would allow players to test it out and see what works and what does not work about it.

Remember, people think mending is OP because the enchanting system and anvil subsystems are broken, not because mending is actually OP. You can't "fix mending" without fixing the problems with those other subsystems.

The phantasmal item frame is an a fantastic idea I hope Mojang see how more valuable phantom membrane becomes with this addition

Finally, someone brings up how you can't eat glistering melons but you can eat golden carrots, that's something I've wanted for a while. It's like someone told Mojang that combining gold with watermelon is poisonous the way they refuse to add it, even though they literally make healing potions

Also nice bringing up the fletching table for giving new arrows again.

I really love that some of these ideas are providing solutions to changes currently implemented via mods and datapacks. The community clearly wants these changes, and implements them with third party tools. Then Cub comes along and creates a lore-consistent, base game way to achieve the same result. Awesomeness.

That's a great way to introduce invisible item frames!

The proposed mending change would massively discourage upgrading any tools to netherite, given how long it takes to mine ancient debris. (I have other issues with this idea, but neriterite is the main problem.)
What I'd propose instead is keep mending as is, but if the item gets down to 0 durability it gets the "broken" tag. Meaning it would be unusable until repaired and could now only be repaired at an anvil., so basically add Cubs idea onto current mending.

(The can't be broken aspect would maybe also work best as mending II or under unbreaking. Or it could be unlocked by having mending and unbreaking together.)

Ancient Vaults are actually an incredible idea to add to Ancient Cities! I think Mojang mentioned wanting to add vaults to older structures at some point, but I can't remember where I heard that so I could have just completely made that up. Regardless, starting with adding them to Ancient Cities would be a fantastic first step to revitalizing older structures with the new vault loot system and encouraging revisiting structures or finding new Ancient Cities. Especially if they made a new Bad Omen difficulty increase to go along with it that makes the Ancient Cities much harder
I'm not sure how I feel about them automatically spawning _angry_ Wardens when opened (I think just insta-summoning one ignoring the three-strike Shrieker system is risk enough for most players), but I love the idea there! Mojang, take notes!

Mob heads: “A way for players to convey information aesthetically.”
That is an amazing sentence. Immaculate precision. All encompassing and without overreach. Bravo king

I love the new variations of arrows that are in this list! I can already imagine all of them being used in multiple situations, in PVP, exploration, redstone contraptions, decoration, mini games etc. Plus that means we might get a new arrow shop in Hermitcraft if this happens!

I personally think that instead of replacing the mending enchant functionality, I think we could have the two version as incomparable enchant options, that way we can use the old version, (still called mending) for AFK redstone farms and armor and the new version (called repair) for casual use on tools. Best of both worlds honestly

The proposed mending change has the same exact reasoning behind it that keep inventory does. I just saves time.
