On June 4th the 3rd member of the Glam Rock Band Sweet Steve Priest passed away. In dedication to his group and their music I put together my favorite 10 songs of this band that were especially huge in the early & mid-70s.
They were formed in 1968 with singer and lead vocalist Brian Connolly, drummer Mike Tucker and bassist Steve Priest. In 1970 guitarrist Andy Scott joined the formation and completed the group. Only Andy Scott is still alive, Connolly passed in 1997 and Tucker died in 2002. Their first chart success came in 1971 when the re-issue of their single "Funny Funny" reached the Top 20 in the UK Single Charts but became a huge hit across the mainland of Europe with #1's in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands. Their next single "Co-Co" reached #2 in the UK and topped the chart in Germany (they had a total of 8 #1 singles in Germany alone). In November that year they released their debut album "Funny How Sweet Co-Co Can Be"
The next years they had multiple singles that charted high across the world with "Little Willy" becoming their highest in the USA, peaking at #3. "Block Buster!" in 1973 became their first and only #1 in their homecountry UK, while "Little Willy", "Wig-Wam Bam", "Block Buster!", "Hell Raiser", "The Ballroom Blitz" and "Teenage Rampage" all topped the single chart in Germany. In 1974 they released their 2nd album "Sweet Funny Adams" and at the end of the year they followed up with "Desolation Boulevard". Both reached the Top 10 in Germany (#2 and #9). Desolation Boulevard became their biggest success in the US - reaching #25. The single "Fox On The Run" became one of their most famous songs and topped the charts in Germany, Australia, South Africa and Denmark and reached Top 3 across Europe, as well as #5 in the USA. It was certified Gold in the USA and Canada.
In 1976 they released their next album "Give Us A Wink", their first album produced and recorded in Germany (Munich). It reached Top 10 in Germany (#9), Denmark (#4) and Sweden (#3). In 1977 they released their next album "Off The Record" and in 1978 after they changed their record label they released "Level Headed". The single "Love Is Like Oxygen" became their final Top 10 hit in Germany, UK and USA. In 1979 Brian Connolly left the band after his problems with alcohol became too much for the band. Sweet continued as a three-piece-band but didn't have success. In 1981 the group disbanded.
So these are my favorite 10 songs of this group. They obviously had a lot more hits and you might love different songs than I do, which I don't mind. You can tell me in the comments if you keep it civil. Thank you!
No copyright infringement intended you can buy and stream all these songs in your favorite store in full length. No money is made with these videos, they are simply a hobby to celebrate music.
