This week, Anujeema Saikia (JNU/ELP) led a workshop about some practical ways to take good care of your language recordings: metadata, file management, and ELAN.

Metadata (data about data) is how we add information like: who's in this recording? When and where was it made? What language(s) are in it? And other crucial information for people who might use your recordings in the future!

This also relates to file management - making sure you don't end up with a giant folder of un-organized files, having no idea what each recording contains or who's in it.

Finally, Anujeema shared the very basics of ELAN - a free program for adding transcriptions, translations, and notes to your recordings. ELAN is very complicated (but very useful), so we'll be holding a dedicated ELAN training session in the spring Advanced webinar!

Just some feedback for the next time through re: the ELAN section: focus more on talking about *what* you're doing in ELAN & *why*, not so much *how*. How it connects to the idea/purpose of the metadata. The workflow slide should perhaps come before the ELAN tutorial because it gives some context for it? I've used Audacity before for some class assignments. I very much appreciate seeing ELAN here because I've heard of it and now I begin to see what it is.
