I've just returned from Amami Oshima after a 2+ week stay. Unfortunately 13 days of my stay was in Amami hospital after a major car accident and 11 broken bones:( My original plan was to travel by ship up through the remote Tokara Islands to Kagoshima stopping at one of the Tokaras for a few nights. Paolo - you've missed significant parts/beaches/forests of Amami Island on your video. I really like the small town of Setouchi and the Honohoshi coast to the far south of Amami - plus its surrounding islands. The Maguro-don and sashimi lobster at Setouchi was incredible! In late Nov it was 27C and I was swimming when it was -2C and snowing in Hokkaido! Note: Naze (town) is no longer called Naze anymore its actually Amami-city - only the busy ferry port is called Naze.

So I am to understand there is pretty much no public transport? I don't intend to rent a car so I am not sure about visiting. I don't care to drive in places I am not familiar with (weird right?) and I will be traveling alone unfortunately.
