What it's like to be a doorman in New York City

As a Doorman in NYC, sometimes you are leaned on as a “doctor, therapist and psychologist.” Producer Nick Rudziewick spoke to NYC doormen about their job and the touching relationships they form with the residents of their buildings.

I used to live in a doorman building and I have to say I did feel safe. Just give you a warm feeling of comfort. They do so much more than hold a door and yes part of a community in the hustle and bustle of NYC where chit chat is frown upon because we are all in a hurry to get somewhere. He will know your pattern so if you are home sick or something happens he will know there is something out of the norm. I recently broke my ankle and had to crawl outside so my neighbor could call an ambulance. Praise GOD I live on the ground floor. Now if I had a doorman a quick buzz on the intercom and it would have been taken care of. Create a relationship with your doorman. So thank you to all doormen.
